A Christmas Legacy is a warm Victorian holiday mystery where Gracie uncovers neglect, shows compassion, and brings hope to a troubled household.

Length: 188 pages / ~ 5 hours.
Narrator: Jenny Sterlin.
Genre: Historical Fiction

Summary:
After leaving her service with Charlotte and Thomas Pitt to marry, Gracie never expected to return to life as a maid—but when her late friend’s daughter, Millie, arrives in a panic just before Christmas, fearing she’ll be accused of theft after items go missing in her employer’s kitchen, Gracie steps in to help. Posing as Millie, she takes over the position to uncover the truth, only to discover that the elderly grandmother confined upstairs is being cruelly neglected by the household, whose owners seem disturbingly impatient for her death.
My Thoughts:
A Christmas Legacy is a lovely Victorian-era holiday mystery that truly captures the spirit of compassion, sacrifice, and quiet courage. Although I’ve read several of Anne Perry’s novels, this was my first Christmas story from her, and it turned out to be a wonderful novella that perfectly fits the season. We return to the world of Thomas and Charlotte Pitt through Gracie Tellman—formerly their maid and now a married mother of three—who finds herself pulled back into service when her good friend’s daughter, Millie, arrives in distress. With items mysteriously disappearing from the kitchen of the wealthy family she works for and the threat of dismissal hanging over her, Millie has nowhere to turn. Without proper references, losing this position could leave her out on the street. Wanting to help, especially so close to the holidays, Gracie steps in and takes Millie’s place, claiming her friend is ill and simply needs a few days to recover.
While the household initially appears normal, Gracie quickly senses that something is terribly wrong upstairs. The family’s elderly grandmother rarely leaves her room, and as Gracie quietly observes the rhythms of the home, she uncovers a shocking level of neglect—one that suggests the couple in charge may be more interested in hastening her decline than caring for her. As always, Gracie’s natural warmth, keen instincts, and willingness to step into difficult situations make her a compelling heroine. I loved the themes woven throughout the story: kindness, compassion, and looking out for those who cannot stand up for themselves. The ending was deeply satisfying and felt exactly right for a Christmas tale.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook edition narrated by Jenny Sterlin, and she was absolutely perfect for the tone of the story. Her narration added so much atmosphere, pulling me straight into a Victorian Christmas filled with mystery, empathy, and hope.
Final Thoughts:
This was a truly enjoyable seasonal read, and one I’m glad I picked up.
