Summary:
Siblings Avery and Reed Bond, still grieving the loss of their beloved Gram, plan to spend the holiday together but find their traditions derailed when Avery is stranded on a ferry in the Puget Sound and Reed is left waiting on shore. What first feels like an inconvenience soon transforms into a holiday blessing as Avery meets a charming sailor and witnesses a Christmas miracle, while Reed unexpectedly connects with a coworker in the same predicament. Filled with heart, humour, and holiday magic, this story shows how love and joy often appear when we least expect them.
My Thoughts:
It simply wouldn’t feel like Christmas without settling in with a new Debbie Macomber holiday novel, and A Ferry Merry Christmas delivers everything I love about her seasonal stories—family, connection, quiet moments of magic, and just the right sprinkle of romance. This year, Macomber brings us Avery and Reed Bond, siblings who have always leaned on each other and are especially intent on spending Christmas together after the recent passing of their beloved Gram. But when Avery’s ferry breaks down halfway across the Puget Sound, their plans shift in a way neither of them could have predicted.
What I especially enjoyed about this story is how Macomber widens the lens beyond Avery and Reed to show how one broken ferry affects multiple families. On board, Avery finds herself surrounded by a wonderfully varied cast: a mother and her sweet young daughter travelling to see Santa, a man racing home because his wife has gone into labour, and others whose holiday hopes are suddenly put on hold. Instead of sinking into frustration, the passengers band together with the kind of warmth and generosity that feels tailor-made for a Christmas tale. Meanwhile, Reed—waiting on shore—forms an unexpected connection of his own, reminding us that sometimes the best surprises happen when our plans fall apart.
There’s a lovely balance of charm, heart, and gentle wonder in this novel, and I found myself especially touched by the way Macomber portrays community in unexpected places.
The Narration:
I have to say, the audiobook version, narrated by Abigail Reno, is absolutely delightful. She captures the many voices beautifully, bringing energy, tenderness, and festive spirit to every chapter. Her performance made the experience feel even more immersive—I truly enjoyed every minute.
Final Thoughts:
Warm, hopeful, and filled with the kind of holiday cheer that lingers, A Ferry Merry Christmas is a perfect December read.
