Summary:
When mysterious out-of-towner “Camille Bayliss” is spotted at a Louisiana bar, no one suspects she’s actually Aubrey Price, a woman seeking justice for a tragedy that’s haunted her for a decade. Convinced that Camille’s husband, Ben Bayliss, knows the truth, Aubrey teams up with Camille—who suspects her husband of dark secrets—to swap places for twelve hours and uncover what he’s hiding. But when Ben turns up dead the next morning, both women find themselves desperate to prove their innocence, because only one of them has an alibi—and in a game of deceit and betrayal, stepping into another woman’s life might just be deadly.
My Thoughts:
After reading First Lie Wins in 2025, Ashley Elston quickly became an author I wanted to follow, so I didn’t hesitate to pick up the audiobook of Anatomy of an Alibi. From the very first scene at Chantilly’s Bar—where a glamorous out-of-towner named Camille Bayliss turns heads, only to reveal she isn’t Camille at all—I was completely drawn in. Elston sets the tone early with deception, secrets, and the unsettling idea that nothing, and no one, is quite what they seem.
The story centres on two women whose lives couldn’t look more different on the surface. Camille Bayliss appears to have it all: wealth, status, and a powerful husband. Aubrey Price, on the other hand, is still haunted by a devastating night from her past and is convinced Camille’s husband, Ben, holds the key to the truth. When the two women agree to swap places for twelve hours in hopes of uncovering Ben’s secrets, the plan feels daring but deceptively simple—until Ben is found murdered the next morning. What follows is a cleverly constructed thriller told through multiple points of view, complete with unreliable narrators, layered timelines, and a town full of characters who all seem to have alibis. The title is absolutely spot on, and I loved how the story revealed itself piece by piece, keeping me guessing not only about Ben’s killer but also about the long-buried truth surrounding Aubrey’s parents’ deaths.
The Narration:
The audiobook production truly elevates the experience. Narrated by MacLeod Andrews and Saski Maarleveld, along with a strong ensemble cast, the performances add clarity and depth to a complex cast of characters. I especially appreciate when an ensemble is used, as it helps distinguish voices and makes the story feel more immersive and authentic.
Final Thoughts:
Anatomy of an Alibi is a smart, twisty thriller that rewards close listening, and I highly recommend the audiobook for anyone who enjoys layered mysteries and expertly paced suspense.
