Summary:
Isadora Bentley is a rule-following, introverted university researcher who’s convinced happiness isn’t in the cards for her. She keeps to herself, avoids social interaction, and is determined to live a quiet, romance-free life. But on her thirtieth birthday, a spontaneous purchase of a magazine titled Thirty-One Ways to Be Happy sparks a secret research project: proving the article wrong. As she reluctantly tests each happiness “tip”—from smiling at strangers to indulging in chocolate—Isadora finds her well-ordered world slowly unraveling in the best possible way. Along the journey, she unexpectedly opens up to new friendships, surprising experiences, and maybe even love, realizing that happiness might not be so far-fetched after all.
My Thoughts:
If you’ve ever felt a little out of step with the world, you may find a kindred spirit in Isadora Bentley. A gifted academic researcher, Isadora is happiest when she’s alone in her neatly ordered life. After a rough childhood filled with relentless teasing and a lack of emotional support at home, she’s grown into a woman who doesn’t take chances—not with friendships, not with romance, and certainly not with happiness. But on her thirtieth birthday, something shifts. On a whim (yes, Isadora on a whim!), she buys a magazine that outlines “Thirty-One Ways to Be Happy” and decides—true to form—to approach it scientifically: by setting out to disprove every last suggestion.
What unfolds instead is a beautiful, unexpected journey. As she puts the article’s suggestions to the test, Isadora starts to experience some surprising results. A chance meeting with an older man on a park bench leads to an unlikely friendship. She forms bonds with a young girl and her mother in her apartment complex and begins to build the kind of community she never imagined herself part of. She also begins working closely with a new professor—one who sees beyond her awkwardness and recognises the warm, thoughtful woman underneath.
Isadora is a wonderfully complex character—brilliant and analytical, but socially out of her depth. At times, her bluntness and awkwardness make her seem younger than thirty, but that’s part of what makes her journey so rewarding. Watching her grow, find joy, and learn to let others in was both heartwarming and, at times, laugh-out-loud funny. A standout moment for me was when she began viewing herself through the lens of a David Attenborough–style documentary—it was a hilarious and insightful metaphor that really stuck with me.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Jorjeana Marie, who did a fantastic job bringing Isadora to life. Her narration captured the character’s awkward charm perfectly, and her David Attenborough impression was an unexpected delight! If you enjoy audiobooks, this format is well worth checking out.
Final Thoughts:
Fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman or The Maid series by Nita Prose will absolutely adore The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley. It’s a story of vulnerability, courage, and the unexpected joy of letting life surprise you. I truly hope there’s more to come in Isadora’s story—I’d love to follow her on the next chapter of her journey.
