Summary:
Maggie McCabe, a brilliant but disgraced Army combat surgeon whose career unravels after personal tragedy strips her of her medical license. At rock bottom, she accepts a risky offer from a former colleague to treat one of the world’s most secretive and powerful men, deep inside a world of wealth, technology, and shadows. But when her patient vanishes under mysterious circumstances, Maggie finds herself ensnared in a deadly conspiracy among the global elite—a web she unknowingly helped create. To survive, she must confront her past, outwit forces far greater than herself, and uncover a truth that could cost her everything.
My Thoughts:
When I heard that Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben were teaming up to write a suspense novel, I knew I had to read it. Gone Before Goodbye combines Witherspoon’s emotional depth with Coben’s signature twists, creating a tense and layered thriller that’s both cinematic and character-driven. The story follows Maggie McCabe, a highly skilled Army combat surgeon whose life has unravelled after a series of personal tragedies leaves her without her medical licence. At rock bottom, she’s offered a second chance—an off-the-books position treating high-paying, anonymous clients who demand perfection and secrecy. What begins as an opportunity to reclaim her sense of purpose quickly thrusts her into a dangerous world of wealth, power, and conspiracy, where morality is optional and the truth could cost her everything.
There’s a lot happening in this story, and it took me a bit to keep the characters straight, but once I settled in, I was hooked. The pacing is fast, the tension unrelenting, and while a few moments stretched believability (a plastic surgeon performing open-heart surgery, for instance), the overall plot is gripping and addictive. It’s a world of opulence and corruption that feels unsettlingly plausible—and one I was happy to escape when it was over.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, and honestly, that’s the way to experience this story. Performed by Reese Witherspoon and a full cast, the production is stellar. Witherspoon’s portrayal of Maggie is heartfelt and strong, and the ensemble cast—complete with authentic accents and dynamic performances—makes it easy to follow the shifting perspectives. If you enjoy full-cast audiobooks that bring a story vividly to life, Gone Before Goodbye is a must-listen.

I found this book tiring and boring The repetitious detail was cumbersome and unnecessary. The book was confusing enough without having to read every little detail of an open heart surgery procedure. I suspect Reese Witherspoon wrote this. The story held nothing of Corbin’s touches and twists of mystery and murder, nor was there even a hint of his subtle humor. I’ve read all of Corbin’s book and loved them. What a disappointment “Gone Before Goodby” was.

Great review, Jodie. I always expect something a bit unbelievable or over the top from a Coben book. I just go with it, because they are so good.
