Summary:
When Hazel is evicted from her Upper East Side apartment and issued an ultimatum by her publisher to meet her next book deadline or be dropped, she impulsively buys a house in rural Pennsylvania sight unseen. Hoping the small-town charm will reignite her creativity and entertain her remaining loyal readers, Hazel arrives to find a struggling community. However, inspiration strikes in the form of Cam, her rugged and grumpy contractor, whose animal-loving, community-driven family further draws her in. While it’s all supposed to be research for her book, Hazel soon finds herself questioning what could possibly go wrong—or right—about falling for her new surroundings and the people in it.
My Thoughts:
What a fun and heartwarming start to Lucy Score’s new series! Story of My Life introduces us to Hazel, a bestselling romance author whose life is unravelling. After being evicted from her Upper East Side apartment and getting a final warning from her publisher, Hazel impulsively buys a house in small-town Pennsylvania—sight unseen. What could possibly go wrong?
As it turns out, quite a lot. The house isn’t exactly the charming escape it looked like in the listing, and the town of Story Lake seems to be hanging on by a thread. But with her best friend and agent Zoe along for the ride, Hazel decides to make the best of things—and finds herself drawing inspiration from the town’s quirky residents, unique local wildlife, and especially one very grumpy (and very attractive) contractor named Cam.
Hazel is a likeable, relatable character who navigates her stressful situation with a lot of humour and heart. I especially enjoyed the witty banter between her and Cam—it was sharp, funny, and gave the slow-burn romance a really satisfying payoff. Both characters have their own emotional baggage, which unfolds gently over the course of the book, and I appreciated how their relationship developed organically. It was especially touching to see them come together to try and help save their struggling town.
The town of Story Lake truly shines in this book. From its oddball mayor—a teenage real estate agent—to community events and unexpected animal encounters, there’s a wonderful small-town charm that makes me excited to return for future books in the series.
While there were a few steamy scenes that I personally skimmed over, they didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, beautifully narrated by Lila Winters and Sebastian York. Their performances were top-notch, with great comedic timing and a wonderful balance between the male and female voices. They really brought the characters—and the town—to life.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re in the mood for a feel-good rom-com with heart, humour, and a small-town setting, Story of My Life is a great choice. I’m already looking forward to the next trip to Story Lake.
