Summary:
🇨🇦 Sydney Lowe’s life in New York unravels when her husband, Curtis, confesses to a meaningless affair, and in a desperate attempt to save their marriage he persuades her to retreat with him to a remote hilltop villa in Spain. Isolated high above the Mediterranean, they struggle to restore both the neglected property and their fractured relationship until two attractive Australian travelers arrive at their door seeking help. Drawn by loneliness and the promise of extra hands, Sydney and Curtis invite the couple to stay, but as tensions rise and dark secrets surface, the fragile trust between the Lowes is pushed to its limits—and not everyone will survive their time at the villa.
My Thoughts:
I love a good thriller, and one set in a remote Mediterranean location immediately grabs my attention. Strangers in the Villa by Robyn Harding did exactly that. The story follows public defender Sydney Lowe, whose already hectic New York life is turned upside down when her husband, Curtis, admits to a meaningless affair with a client. Hoping to repair the damage, Curtis convinces Sydney to retreat with him to a remote hilltop villa in Spain where they can renovate the crumbling property—and their marriage. Reluctantly, Sydney agrees to take the chance on a fresh start.
Their fragile new beginning takes an unexpected turn when a pair of Australian travellers show up at the villa after their van breaks down. By this point Sydney is feeling isolated and craving companionship, so the couple is invited to stay in exchange for helping with the renovations. What begins as a seemingly friendly arrangement between two couples gradually shifts into something far more unsettling. As the days pass, secrets begin to surface and the tension steadily builds, revealing that the travellers’ arrival may not be as accidental as it first appeared.
This thriller captivated me right from the start. Harding masterfully reveals just enough information at exactly the right moments, keeping the suspense simmering throughout the story. I especially appreciated how well developed the backstories of both couples were—each layer adding depth and raising new questions until their histories eventually collide and the true reason for the Australians’ visit is revealed. The conclusion felt satisfying and well earned.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Katherine Littrell, and I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. Her narration brought the characters to life, and her authentic-sounding Australian accent added an extra layer of realism to the travellers’ dialogue.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Strangers in the Villa was an engaging listening experience and a gripping thriller that kept me hooked the whole way through. I highly recommend it.
