Summary:
Mallory Blue has always cherished her grandmother Nan’s community theater and annual Christmas play, but this year everything changes as Nan struggles with dementia and Mallory takes on the overwhelming task of directing the show herself. With the help of Nan’s journal—filled with stories behind each ornament on her tree—and the unexpected support of Hollis, the once-rebellious boy from her past now playing Santa, Mallory discovers hidden pieces of her grandmother’s life. As she faces pivotal choices in both love and career, Nan’s wisdom and Hollis’s steady presence guide her toward finding the true magic of the season.
My Thoughts:
Sometimes the best gifts really aren’t under the tree, and Annie Rains captures that beautifully in The Christmas Keepsake. This holiday story follows Mallory Blue, who has always loved her grandmother Nan’s community theatre and annual Christmas play. But with Nan now losing her memories to dementia, Mallory suddenly finds herself carrying not just the weight of the play, but also the heartache of watching her beloved grandmother slip away.
I’ve read several of Annie Rains’ books, but this one is by far her best. The depth of the story exceeded my expectations—it’s not only a holiday romance, but also a moving family drama spanning three generations. Nan, Mallory, and even Mallory’s mother Daisy are given such layered, heartfelt portrayals that I found myself completely invested in their journeys. As a nurse, Mallory is stretched thin—working overtime to keep Nan in her care home, while also trying to honour her grandmother’s wishes by directing the Christmas play. It’s clear from the beginning that she’s overwhelmed, yet her love and devotion never falter.
Hollis, who Mallory remembers as a bit of a troublemaker from her school days, returns to town to visit his grandfather in the same care home as Nan. Their reunion quickly blossoms into a touching friendship, and Hollis steps in to help Mallory with the play, even donning the red suit to play Santa Claus. Beyond the holiday cheer, he offers something deeper: steady emotional support and an understanding of what it means to walk alongside someone living with dementia. The author does a fabulous job of providing a meaningful backstory to this character.
One of my favourite elements of the novel is Nan’s journal and the memory box filled with handmade ornaments, each carrying a story from her past. These moments not only connect Mallory to the grandmother she’s starting to lose, but also give the reader a poignant look at how dementia alters memory and relationships. Annie Rains treats the subject with tenderness and respect, showing both the heartbreak and the beauty in holding onto love when memories begin to fade.
The Narration:
I listened to this on audiobook, and the narration truly elevated the experience. Ann Richardson brought Mallory and Nan to life with such warmth and nuance that it felt as though I were listening in on a family’s most intimate moments. Her ability to capture the voices of women from different generations is remarkable, and the tenderness she infused into each character made the story even more moving. Her performance didn’t just complement the book—it added an extra layer of depth and emotion that made the story unforgettable.
Final Thoughts:
If you enjoy holiday novels that weave together romance, family, and a touch of bittersweet reality, I can’t recommend The Christmas Keepsake enough. It’s a heartfelt reminder that sometimes the truest holiday magic comes from the memories we keep and the love we share.
