Summary:
As children, Chloe Hanako Quinn and Oliver Jones formed a deep bond through a pen pal assignment—one that mysteriously began when he heard a whispered note she tucked into her letter. Their friendship blossomed into something more, until tragedy tore them apart. Over twenty years later, Chloe is a struggling high school guidance counselor in New York City, facing layoffs, rising rent, and emotional isolation. To lift her spirits, she writes encouraging messages on yellow origami roses, eventually leaving them around the city to inspire others. Meanwhile, Oliver, now a successful but haunted financial analyst, unexpectedly discovers one of Chloe’s roses—rekindling a connection that may change both of their lives forever.
My Thoughts:
There’s something about stories that begin in childhood that always captures my heart, and The Incredible Kindness of Paper is exactly that kind of story. Evelyn Skye weaves a touching tale about Chloe Hanako Quinn and Oliver Jones, who first meet in elementary school when they’re assigned as pen pals. What starts as an innocent friendship blossoms into young love—until Oliver suddenly disappears from Chloe’s life, leaving her with no explanation.
Fast forward more than twenty years, and Chloe is now a high school guidance counsellor in New York City. Or at least, she was. After being laid off, she finds herself juggling rising rent, the end of a situationship, and a creeping sense of loneliness. In a moment of desperation, Chloe turns to herself for encouragement, writing uplifting notes on yellow origami paper and folding them into roses. At first, the roses are just for her, but when one accidentally lands in the hands of a neighbour who needs it, she realizes how powerful these small gestures of kindness can be. Before long, Chloe begins scattering her origami roses around the city, sparking a quiet movement of hope.
Oliver, meanwhile, has built a successful career as a financial analyst, determined never to relive the instability of his youth. His childhood was shaped by constant upheaval—his mother’s risky decisions forcing their family into hiding again and again. While his ambition gave him financial security, the past still lingers. And then one day, a yellow origami rose finds its way to him, setting off a chain of events that changes everything.
This book is, quite simply, a delight. I loved how Chloe’s small acts of kindness rippled outward, touching strangers in unexpected and profound ways. In a world that feels heavy with tragedy, Evelyn Skye offers readers a reminder that light and hope can spread, one small gesture at a time. The way Chloe and Oliver’s paths circle back toward one another is tender, serendipitous, and ultimately so satisfying. Their love story feels like it was worth waiting for.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook version, which was performed by an ensemble cast. The multiple narrators brought depth to the story and made it easy to follow the different perspectives. I’d happily recommend this format to anyone who enjoys audiobooks.
Final Thoughts:
The Incredible Kindness of Paper is a heartwarming and timely novel about love, resilience, and the simple ways we can brighten each other’s lives. It’s a story that lingers with you long after the final page (or in my case, the final track).

ER LeVar
I love a second chance romance where the first “romance” is young and innocent and the second chance is when the characters have grown jaded.

Thanks for sharing your review, Jodie! I remember when having a pen pal was popular. This seems like an interesting book. I’m more into thrillers, but I’ll add this to my reading list for now.

I like thrillers as well but they are not my favourite genre.
