Genre: General Fiction

Summary:
Twice tells the story of Alfie Logan, who discovers at age eight that he can relive any moment of his life and alter its outcome—though he must accept the consequences of his second choice. Growing up, he uses this gift to erase mistakes, escape dangers, and eventually perfect his way into love with Gianna, the woman he believes is his soulmate. But when temptation causes his gaze to wander, Alfie learns the devastating rule that once he undoes love, he can never win it back, forcing him to make a choice that changes his life forever. Framed by an interrogation years later, when an ailing Alfie is accused of rigging casino games, his remarkable story unfolds as both a cautionary tale and a poignant exploration of love, desire, and second chances, showcasing Albom’s gift for weaving enchanting, heart-stirring narratives.
My Thoughts:
What if you could do everything in your life—twice? That’s the question at the heart of Mitch Albom’s newest and most thought-provoking novel, Twice, a moving love story that explores the cost of second chances and the fragility of human desire.
When eight-year-old Alfie Logan discovers he has the ability to relive any moment in his life, he quickly learns that every second chance comes with consequences—sometimes small, sometimes life-altering. As he grows up, Alfie uses his gift to fix mistakes, dodge danger, and eventually, to perfect his pursuit of love. When he meets Gianna, he’s convinced he’s found “the one.” But as time passes, Alfie’s wandering heart puts everything at risk, and he learns a devastating truth: once he undoes a love, that person can never fall in love with him again.
Told in the first person, the story unfolds through Alfie’s memories and the diary he shares with a detective years later, after being arrested for allegedly cheating and winning millions at a casino. Through this clever frame, Albom examines what it means to be human—to yearn, to make mistakes, and to wish for do-overs that might only deepen our regrets.
I found this story both heartfelt and deeply introspective. I loved witnessing Alfie’s early joy as he discovered his ability, and later, the moral complexity of how he chose to use it. Albom’s writing captures the beauty and messiness of love and self-discovery with such authenticity that it’s impossible not to reflect on your own life while reading.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Mitch Albom himself, and it added an extra layer of intimacy. His tone and cadence were perfectly suited to the story—so natural, it felt as though he were recounting his own life. It’s one of those rare cases where the narration makes the story even more powerful, and I can’t recommend the format enough.
Final Thoughts:
Twice is an enchanting, tender, and soul-stirring exploration of love, regret, and the choices that shape us. It made me think, feel, and ultimately, appreciate the beauty of imperfection—and the fact that maybe we only ever need one life, lived honestly, the first time around.

Somehow we can’t cheat at life, I think. What we do all seems to catch up with us, for good or for bad!
Thanks for the review.

Excellent review, Jodie. I love listening to Mitch Albom’s books and am on a list at the library for this one. He always makes me think about my life and choices. This sounds like it will do the same. Thinking about the things I would redo and what the consequences might be.
