Summary:
In B.K. Borison’s enchanting new holiday romance, Ghost of Christmas Past Nolan Callahan expects another routine haunting until he encounters Harriet York, a kindhearted people-pleaser whose past holds unexpected ties to his own. While Nolan grapples with his ghostly existence and Harriet questions why she’s being haunted at all, their journey through her memories uncovers deep connections and the possibility of something more than either imagined. With Christmas Eve looming, they must decide whether their futures lie in letting go—or in holding on to the magical, heartfelt bond growing between them. Filled with charm, humour, and holiday spirit, this whimsical romance promises to be Borison’s most swoon-worthy yet.
My Thoughts:
I picked up Good Spirits expecting a sweet, feel-good holiday romance—and while it wasn’t quite the festive delight I’d hoped for, it was still an enjoyable and well-written story with humour, heart, and a touch of magic.
Nolan Callahan is a Ghost of Christmas Past, destined to spend yet another holiday guiding humans through their memories before slipping back into his lonely, in-between existence. But this year, he’s assigned to Harriet York—a woman who doesn’t understand why she’s being haunted at all. She’s always tried to be a good person, doing what’s expected of her, even becoming a lawyer because it pleased her parents. As Nolan and Harriet begin their journey through her past, they uncover shared experiences and an unexpected connection that challenges the rules of the afterlife itself.
The relationship that develops between them is heartfelt and layered, and I really enjoyed how Borison explored themes of self-discovery, purpose, and second chances. The character development was excellent, and the concept of a forbidden romance between a ghost and his human “assignment” felt fresh and intriguing.
That said, I did find the story lacked the Christmas charm I was hoping for—it could have easily taken place at any time of the year. And while I don’t mind a bit of romance, the multiple steamy scenes weren’t really my thing. I would have preferred a more closed-door approach, or at least some indication in the synopsis that the story leaned spicy. Thankfully, I was able to skip those parts without losing the thread of the story.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Karissa Vacker and Will Watt, and highly recommend that format. Vacker—one of my favourite narrators—brought warmth and sincerity to Harriet, while Watt’s deep British accent was the perfect counterbalance for Nolan’s character. Their performances added life and depth to the story and made the experience that much more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Good Spirits is a charming, slightly unconventional holiday romance that blends humour, emotion, and a hint of the supernatural. While it wasn’t quite the cosy Christmas read I was expecting, it’s still worth a listen if you enjoy stories about connection, growth, and love that defies the odds.

Yes Rebecca. I read a book a few months ago and the author actually said to skip Chapter X if you don’t like the steam! I appreciated it. ☺️

Nice review, Jodie. I have begun to skip Borison’s books as I find them to have become a bit too steamy for me. As I get older, I’ve become a bit more prudish, I guess. It does sound like it would be a good story otherwise.

I’m with you Carla. I’ve read other books from the author that weren’t as steamy.

I enjoyed this one as well. And I also agree that it wasn’t quite what I’d been expecting/hoping for either. Great review!
