Summary:
When Lillie Silva’s son leaves for college and her husband abruptly dumps her for another woman, her carefully built life on Cape Cod falls apart—but to her surprise, she isn’t heartbroken, she’s furious. A lifelong caregiver as a mother, wife, and nurse-midwife, Lillie starts putting herself first for the first time, even if that means a few outrageous decisions—like crashing her ex’s wedding dressed as the angel of death. Along the way, she reconnects with her estranged, glamorous sister, finds support from the man who once almost killed her in a car accident, and befriends a troubled teen in need of guidance. In the wreckage of her old life, Lillie discovers that unexpected allies and second chances can lead to a whole new beginning—straight out of the clear blue sky.
My Thoughts:
Kristan Higgins never lets me down. Out of the Clear Blue Sky is everything I’ve come to expect from her—emotional, smart, funny, and full of heart. Told through the alternating perspectives of two women on very different paths, this is a story about heartbreak, reinvention, and the unexpected ways we rebuild when life falls apart.
Lillie Silva is a nurse-midwife, a loving mother, and a respected member of her Cape Cod community. She’s bracing herself for her only child to leave for college when her husband drops another bombshell—he’s leaving her for another woman. The heartbreak is intense, but so is Lillie’s rage. What follows is a rollercoaster of grief, anger, and some hilariously rogue behaviour, including wedding crashing (in costume!) and a particularly memorable skunk incident.
I absolutely loved Lillie’s voice—raw, honest, and often laugh-out-loud funny. She’s someone who’s given so much of herself to others and is finally forced to turn that care inward. Her journey from devastation to self-discovery was both emotional and empowering.
On the other side of this story is Melissa, the so-called “other woman.” Surprisingly—or maybe not—I liked Melissa from the start. She’s complex and unapologetically ambitious, with a sharp edge that made her perspective just as compelling as Lillie’s. Her backstory gave real insight into why she lives the way she does, and her bond with her niece Ophelia added a human touch that made me care about her, even when she made questionable choices.
The contrast between Lillie and Melissa made the story all the more dynamic. Watching them both grow and shift in different ways was incredibly satisfying. There’s a strong theme of resilience running through this novel—whether it’s about surviving betrayal, overcoming trauma, or simply finding joy in the next chapter of life.
A heads-up for readers: there is a content warning for sexual abuse, which is treated with care and sensitivity throughout the book.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook and truly feel it added an extra layer of enjoyment to the story. Xe Sands narrates Lillie’s chapters with a warmth and emotional depth that made me feel every heartbreak, every bit of frustration, and every step toward healing. She perfectly captures Lillie’s dry humour and underlying vulnerability. C.J. Bloom, who voices Melissa’s chapters, brings a confident, cool, and complex tone to the character that worked so well. Her performance gives Melissa dimension and heart, helping me understand her even when I didn’t agree with her actions. Together, the two narrators made this an engaging, immersive listen. If you’re a fan of audiobooks, this one is a standout—well-paced, well-cast, and so easy to get swept up in.
Final Thoughts:
Out of the Clear Blue Sky is a heartfelt, funny, and surprisingly hopeful read. It’s about picking up the pieces, standing tall, and letting the next chapter unfold—even if it arrives out of the clear blue sky.
