My Thoughts:
As someone who loves collecting points and miles, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Brian Kelly’s How to Win at Travel. I’ve been following The Points Guy for years and have redeemed points for flights to Europe and free hotel stays, so I knew this book would be right up my alley. I wasn’t disappointed.
Kelly, the founder of The Points Guy, has turned his passion for travel and loyalty programs into a comprehensive guide that’s equal parts practical advice and personal storytelling. He walks readers through everything from the basics of what points and miles are, to the best ways to acquire and redeem them, and even how to score those coveted upgrades. He also goes beyond loyalty programs, covering topics like how to beat jet lag, stay healthy while travelling, travel with family, and even conquer a fear of flying. I particularly appreciated his reminders about the importance of travel insurance—a detail many of us tend to overlook.
What I enjoyed most was the personal side of the book. Kelly shares how he first became “The Points Guy” as a teenager, booking trips for his family using his father’s stash of points and miles. These stories add warmth and personality to what could otherwise feel like just another travel guide. As a Canadian, I did notice that the book is written with a U.S. audience in mind, especially when it comes to credit card recommendations, but the strategies and mindset he shares are absolutely relevant no matter where you live. While there’s valuable insight for travellers at any stage, I’d say the information is especially helpful for beginners just getting into the world of points and miles, rather than seasoned collectors who may already know the fundamentals.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Kelly himself, and his expressive, engaging delivery made it feel like he was sitting across from me, sharing his travel wisdom over a cup of coffee. That personal touch really made the information stick.
Final Thoughts:
Whether you’re new to points and miles or already deep into the hobby, How to Win at Travel is an easy-to-read, informative, and inspiring resource. It left me even more motivated to keep levelling up my own travel game and reminded me just how many opportunities are out there to see the world without breaking the bank.

I first signed up for a credit card with airline miles after a miserable trip driving back to Pennsylvania from Illinois one summer. Next month I will be taking my second flying trip out there paid for by free miles.

Great review, Jodie! I’ve always wondered how point/miles systems work when it comes to travel, so this is perfect! I’m glad the tips are helpful, despite some things being U.S. based. Thank you for the recommendation.

Both of my sisters are great about traveling and saving/earning points to help with that. I wish I was better. Of course one of my sisters now lives in Scotland, so a trip to Paris for the weekend is like a trip to Florida for me, lol. Thanks for sharing this one!
