Summary:
High school English teacher June Flint is accidentally hurled 85 years into the future, far from her dream job, her ailing mother, and even her beloved Sunday night pizza. When her cell phone mysteriously connects back to the present—though only to her workplace nemesis, gym teacher Mikey Shannon—future June enlists his help to befriend present-day June and prevent her from vanishing altogether. The catch? Present-day June can’t stand Mikey, while Mikey finds himself reluctantly devoting time to both versions of her, from volunteering at school to braving roller coasters and even adopting a puppy. But as future June and Mikey grow closer, they must face the biggest question of all: if they succeed in fixing the past, what happens to the future—and to the unexpected love blossoming between them?
My Thoughts:
Romance gets a clever twist in Cara Bastone’s Maybe This Time, where high school English teacher June Flint is swept 85 years into the future thanks to a solar flare. One moment she’s juggling her dream job, her ailing mother, and her beloved Sunday night pizza, and the next she’s stranded in a time she doesn’t belong. When her cell phone mysteriously connects to the past, it can only dial one number: her work nemesis, gym teacher Mikey Shannon. Future June needs Mikey’s help to befriend present-day June and keep her from vanishing altogether—a task made even more complicated when real feelings begin to develop between them.
As for the romance, it’s both heartwarming and funny. June and Mikey have history that stretches back to childhood, and their grown-up dynamic is filled with banter, reluctant teamwork, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. I loved how their relationship slowly unfolded, showing how love can bring out the very best in people.
The Narration:
This is another winning partnership between Cara Bastone and Audible Originals. The story itself is charming and inventive, but the production of the audiobook elevates it to something truly special. The use of sound effects and a full ensemble cast made listening an immersive experience. A standout moment for me was a roller coaster scene where the sound shifted between earbuds—it felt so real I almost braced myself for the drop! The performances from the cast were top-notch and brought the story vividly to life.
Final Thoughts:
Maybe This Time is an engaging, highly entertaining listen that blends a clever time-travel premise with a heartfelt romance. I had such a good time with this audiobook, and I sincerely hope this isn’t the last collaboration between Bastone and Audible Originals.
