Summary:
Emma Page grew up in a family that worships highbrow literature, with her parents running a vanity press and her sister wielding influence as a powerful book reviewer. Secretly working on her own romance novel—considered beneath her family’s standards—Emma finds inspiration from her late grandmother’s collection of summer romances at the family cottage. When she uncovers a secret in her grandmother’s belongings that could ruin her parents’ publishing business and reputation, Emma must decide whether to protect her family’s legacy or let their downfall unfold.
My Thoughts:
As someone who adores stories about books, publishing, and the bonds that shape us, The Page Turner by Viola Shipman was an absolute treat. This charming family drama is full of heart, humour, and literary nods that had me smiling, reflecting, and even tearing up at times.
Emma Page is the “black sheep” in a family that’s all about literature—serious literature, that is. Her parents, both authors, run a vanity press called The Mighty Pages and take great pride in what they consider to be fine fiction. Romance and women’s fiction? That’s just fluff, in their view. Emma, however, has a secret: she wrote a romance novel years ago and has hidden it away, afraid of what her family would think.
While spending time at the family cottage—a place full of memories of her late grandmother Gigi, who had a soft spot for juicy summer romances—Emma stumbles upon a long-buried secret in Gigi’s belongings. That discovery threatens to shake up everything her parents have built, especially since the secret has already fallen into the hands of a bitter industry insider with a score to settle.
What unfolds is a heartfelt and witty exploration of family, legacy, and the power of storytelling. I was especially drawn to how the book gently critiques the literary elitism that exists in the publishing world, all while celebrating books of every genre. Shipman reminds us that books matter—not because of where they sit on a shelf or how they’re categorized, but because of how they make us feel. Whether they entertain, educate, or help us escape, all stories have value. As someone who loves both romance and women’s fiction, I couldn’t agree more.
Beyond the publishing drama, this novel is also a tribute to the people who shape our love of reading. Shipman speaks movingly about the influence of his grandmothers and mother—how their encouragement and love of books helped him through times when he felt different or out of place. That theme—of being seen, of being nurtured by those who came before us—really resonated with me.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Katharine Chin, and she delivered a lovely performance. Her voice suited Emma’s character perfectly, bringing warmth and sincerity to the story. Whether you read it or listen, the experience is equally rewarding.
Final Thoughts:
The Page Turner is a celebration of family, forgiveness, and the stories that shape us. It’s a reminder that there’s no “wrong” kind of book—only the right book at the right time.
