Every year, I look for ways to be more intentional about my readingāand this time, I wanted to focus on something thatās been on my mind for a while: reading more books by Canadian authors. Canada has such a rich, diverse literary landscape, filled with voices that deserve to be discovered, shared, and celebrated. So in 2026, Iām committing to a brand-new personal challenge⦠and Iām inviting you to join me!
š What Is the 2026 Great Canadian Reading Challenge?
The idea is simple:
Iām calling it The 2026 Great Canadian Reading Challenge, and my goal is to highlight the incredible talent that comes from right here at home.
The goal is to read 12 books written by Canadian authors over the course of 2026. That works out to one book per month, which feels both manageable and meaningful.
š Who Counts as a Canadian Author?
- The author must have been born in Canada, OR
- They currently reside in Canada
Any genre, any format, any time periodāfiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, thrillers, romance, fantasy⦠you choose your own reading path.

I love this challenge, Jodie. I am cutting back this year, but this is definitely one I want to participate in. I also try to read more Canadian authors. A few others are: Emma Donaghue, Chevy Stevens, Carly Fortune, Kelley Armstrong, Vicki Delany, Carolyn Arnold, Thomas King, Darlene Foster, Heather Marshall, Ann Lambert, Joy Fielding, Heather Marshall, Holly Kennedy, Simone St. James, Terrie Todd, Heather Smith, Patricia Johns and Susanna Kearsley.
Everytime I find out an author is Canadian, I add them to my Canadian Authors list. I have several books already in mind for this challenge.

Hi, it’s a great idea but I’m not sure I’ll manage 12 books.
There aren’t a lot of writers from QuĆ©bec in your list, like Michel Tremblay, Dany LaferriĆØre, Marie-Claire Blais, Gabrielle Roy, AndrĆ©e Michaud (crime), Roxane Bouchard (crime), Michel Jean (Indigenous) or Eric Plamondon.

Thanks for adding to the list Emma.
