Narrator: Dara Rosenberg.
Genre: Romance

Summary:
Evelyn Schwartz has her dream job producing a live televised musical of A Christmas Carol during Hanukkah, but when a set accident triggers one of her chronic migraines, she’s stunned to find her ex-husband, David Adler, working as the studio doctor. Two years after their divorce, Evelyn is still a driven workaholic, and David still sees the woman he once loved—especially when “ghosts” from her past heartbreaks appear, pulling him back into her orbit. As the pressure of the production builds and old wounds resurface, their undeniable chemistry sparks again, forcing them to confront whether they can rewrite their history. It may take a Hanukkah miracle for Evelyn and David to turn their ghosts of the past into a future together.
My Thoughts:
Every year, I look forward to Jean Meltzer’s holiday release, knowing I’ll get a story that’s warm, emotional, and thoughtful. The Eight Heartbreaks of Hanukkah is exactly that—a romance steeped in Jewish tradition, personal experience, and heartfelt honesty. Meltzer never shies away from exploring tough subjects like chronic illness and grief, and she does it with both compassion and clarity. She continues to be a must-read author for me.
The story follows Evelyn Schwartz, a powerhouse producer preparing a live, televised musical of A Christmas Carol—which means long hours, impossible deadlines, and absolutely no room for anything as inconvenient as her chronic migraines. When she lands in the medical bay after an on-set accident, she’s stunned to discover that the studio doctor filling in is none other than her ex-husband, David Adler. They haven’t seen each other in two years, not since the deeply painful end of their marriage after the loss of their unborn child. Evelyn has thrown herself into work ever since, pushing her body far past its limits.
As the pressure of the production mounts, Evelyn’s migraines worsen, often leaving her faint and injured. And then the “ghosts” begin—eight visions tied to her Hanukkahs past, each revealing a heartbreak that shaped her into who she is now. Much like the classic Dickens story she’s producing, these visitations force Evelyn to take a hard look at the choices she’s made, the wounds she’s buried, and the future she still hopes for. At the centre of it all is David, whose steady presence makes it harder and harder to deny the chemistry that never really disappeared.
What sets Meltzer apart is the care she brings to her storytelling. She includes thoughtful trigger warnings up front, and at the end of the book shares why this story is so personal to her. That added layer of openness makes the novel all the more meaningful.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, and once again Dara Rosenberg shines. She captures Evelyn perfectly—her stubborn drive, her vulnerability, her humour—while also giving David a grounded, convincing voice. Meltzer and Rosenberg make a fantastic team, and this performance is one I’ll remember.
Final Thoughts:
A heartfelt second-chance romance wrapped in tradition, grief, healing, and hope—this is another beautiful holiday read from Jean Meltzer.
