My Week:
It’s been a sweltering week with temperatures soaring into the 30s °C—far too hot to enjoy my southwest-facing patio after 2 p.m. Keeping the plants watered has been a challenge, and the hummingbirds are draining their feeder every couple of days. Thankfully, the forecast is calling for cooler temperatures this weekend.
I had a lovely Sunday out with my mom and sister—lunch and a bit of shopping made for a nice afternoon. Then on Wednesday, my husband, sister, and I were able to enjoy lunch together as well. Unfortunately, the week took a turn on Thursday evening when my dad choked on his dinner. He began coughing and vomiting, and when it became clear it wasn’t subsiding, we called an ambulance and he was taken to the emergency room which was extremely busy. Thankfully, his symptoms seem to have resolved about an hour after we went into the ER. He stayed in the hospital overnight and had a scope to make sure everything was clear and I’m happy to say he came home Friday afternoon. Stressful times. I know many of you understand.
Books I’ve Added to My Shelves This Week:
From Publishers, Netgalley, & Libro.fm: I have one outstanding request.

Carly Porter, an accountant and freelance personal stylist scarred by her father’s gambling, knows the cost of risky bets—but she takes one anyway when she teams up with her best friend Sasha to save a struggling fashion magazine by giving a high-profile makeover to Sasha’s brother, Brooks. Once a carefree party guy, Brooks is now a withdrawn physician haunted by past loss, but he agrees to the project to support his sister. As Carly works to revive Brooks’s image, the real transformation happens between them, sparking an unexpected connection that threatens Carly’s professional dreams. To find happiness, both must confront old wounds—and take a chance on love. Thank you to Brilliance Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC.
From The Library:

In Our Last Vineyard Summer, Betsy Whiting returns to her family’s beloved Martha’s Vineyard home after a difficult year at Columbia and the death of her senator father, only to learn her mother wants to sell the house to settle his debts. As Betsy reconnects with her sisters and confronts unresolved tensions, a forbidden past romance, and her parents’ complex legacy, she must decide what truly matters. Set across two timelines—1965 and 1978—this poignant, nostalgic novel explores love, family, and identity through the eyes of two generations of women learning to stand firm in their convictions and redefine what home means.

After the worst day of her life, Clementine forms a plan to protect her heart: work hard, find someone decent to love, and always chase the moon—her aunt’s advice to keep going. Her life seems to be going according to plan, except for the love part, as she keeps people at a distance, unsure if her heart can handle it. Then, she discovers a man in her late aunt’s apartment—kind-eyed, Southern, and with a love for lemon pies. The twist? He’s from the past, seven years ago, while she lives in the future. The apartment is a strange pocket of time, and Clementine knows that if she lets herself fall for him, it could ruin everything. After all, love isn’t about time—it’s about timing.
What I’m Watching:
We’ve been powering through The Bear on Disney+ (I believe it’s on FX and Hulu in the U.S.), and yes—we’re definitely late to the party on this one. The series follows a young chef with a Michelin-starred background who returns home to Chicago to run his late brother’s sandwich shop. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show with such deeply developed characters. Family dynamics are at the heart of the story, and the emotional weight they carry is incredible. Jeremy Allen White is fantastic in the lead role, and Jamie Lee Curtis delivers a powerful recurring performance that earned her an Emmy. An other fans of this show?

Carla@CarlaLovesToRead
Sorry your dad went through that and am glad it turned out okay, it is scary for sure. I loved The Seven Year Slip and hope you do as well. I have a question about The Bear. A friend said that the characters are pretty nasty to one another and she sopped watching, do you see that or is it just her? I hope this week has been better, Jodie. Our heat broke for a couple of days, but it is back.

The Bear is one of the most chaotic shows I’ve ever seen Carla. The intensity of the chaos diminishes as the seasons progress. What shines for me in this show is the character development and acting.
