My Week:
It’s been another warm week—not too hot, but definitely dry. We haven’t had much rain in weeks, and the lawn is starting to show it. It’s also been a full week in other ways.
On Monday, I had my first appointment with a cardiologist. It went well. I’ve been diagnosed with a condition that will be monitored regularly, but for now, there’s no need for medication as my blood pressure is looking good. A follow-up echocardiogram has been scheduled for March 2026. He explained that sometimes measurements on an echo can be a bit off, so we’ll wait and see what the next one shows—but he’s not concerned at this point.
Tuesday was spent meeting with a healthcare professional to explore home support options for my parents. It was an informative and reassuring conversation.
On Wednesday, I accompanied my mom to her much-anticipated appointment with a specialized cardiologist. We learned a lot about her condition and met with a genetic counsellor, who arranged for her genetic testing. This information is important not only for my mom but also for me, my siblings, and even our children. It could also be relevant for her brother and his family.
The cardiologist is hopeful that a newly available medication could make a real difference for her. While it’s expensive and delivered directly to her home, it will be fully covered once her Fair Pharmacare deductible is met. He shared that for some patients, this drug has been life-changing, though most do see at least some improvement. She’ll have monthly echocardiograms for the first three months to monitor her response and fine-tune the dosage. We celebrated this hopeful news with a lovely lunch together.
Friday wrapped up the week with a little fun—my husband and I went out for an early dinner followed by some time at the casino before picking up our son, who had spent the week in Victoria.
Books I’ve Added to My Shelves This Week:
From Publishers, Netgalley, & Libro.fm: I requested two more audiobooks from Netgalley this week so I now have three audiobooks pending.
Eva Kitt never imagined her journalism dreams would lead to hosting Sausage Talk, a quirky show interviewing B-list celebs over hot dogs. But when her on-air rant about her college ex, now-famous influencer Rylie Cooper, goes viral, she’s suddenly back in the spotlight. Rylie, who’s built his brand on combating toxic masculinity, proposes a public redemption arc: a series of dates with Eva, followed by honest debriefs on his channel to prove he’s changed. Eva reluctantly agrees—not to help him, but to boost her own career and expose him further. Yet as their staged outings turn unexpectedly genuine, Eva begins to question whether the man who once hurt her could now be the one to heal her. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for this ARC.

What I’m Watching:
I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Netflix book-to-film adaptation of Julia Whelan’s My Oxford Year. Sofia Carson stars as an ambitious American student who heads to Oxford, England to pursue a lifelong dream—only to meet a charming local (Corey Mylchreest) who changes everything. Their unexpected connection transforms both their lives in ways they never imagined. The film premieres on August 1, and I can’t wait to see how this heartfelt story comes to life on screen.

Thank you Ash.
Trish
Sounds like progress on the health issues. I am just getting to the point where I need to get involved in my mother’s health, and it feels a bit overwhelming on top of my own and my son’s issues.
thathappyreader
It can be very overwhelming Trish. I’m a retired nurse as I think that makes me feel even more responsible for ensuring they are as healthy as they can be.

What a week—full in every sense of the word. It sounds like you’re carrying a lot with such grace, balancing your own health news alongside advocating for your parents. I’m so glad your cardiology appointment brought reassurance, and that there’s hope on the horizon for your mum with the new medication. That’s no small thing. I love that you took time to celebrate the good news with lunch—those small, sweet pauses matter so much. And ending the week with dinner and the casino? Perfect touch of levity. Wishing you a restful weekend after such a whirlwind.
