My Week:
It’s been a busy and emotional week filled with medical appointments for my family. Watching our parents age is never easy, and while we can’t always fix everything, the best we can do is support them through each challenge with love and patience. At times, I feel as though I was meant to be a nurse just for this stage of my parents’ lives.
To those of you walking a similar path—stay strong, take care of yourselves, and know you’re not alone.
The weather mirrored the week: hot and heavy most days, followed by much-needed rain on Friday. Now the sunshine has returned, with a bright weekend and week ahead in the forecast. My hubby and I are going to try and have a meal out sometime this weekend and I’m looking forward to that.
Books I’ve Added to My Shelves This Week:
From Publishers, Netgalley, & Libro.fm: I have one audiobook still pending.
From The Library:
Violet Adams, the youngest and most traditional member of a spirited family of women on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, finds herself unmoored after a sudden breakup and personal tragedy. With the support of her best friend Aly Knox—a young influencer grieving her own mother and adjusting to Southern life—Violet sets out to rediscover herself. Determined to break free from the role she’s always played, Violet searches for meaning, success, and maybe even love in the heart of the Lowcountry.
As children, Chloe Hanako Quinn and Oliver Jones formed a deep bond through a pen pal assignment—one that mysteriously began when he heard a whispered note she tucked into her letter. Their friendship blossomed into something more, until tragedy tore them apart. Over twenty years later, Chloe is a struggling high school guidance counselor in New York City, facing layoffs, rising rent, and emotional isolation. To lift her spirits, she writes encouraging messages on yellow origami roses, eventually leaving them around the city to inspire others. Meanwhile, Oliver, now a successful but haunted financial analyst, unexpectedly discovers one of Chloe’s roses—rekindling a connection that may change both of their lives forever.
From Audible: None
What I’m Watching:
This week I was looking for something light to watch, and the comedy Leanne on Netflix fit the bill. The show stars comedian Leanne Morgan as a resilient Southern mom starting over with the support of her family after her husband leaves her for another woman. I especially love that Kristen Johnston is cast as her unapologetically unfiltered sister—she adds so much fun to the dynamic.

I love the sound of The Incredible Kindness Of Paper… I hope you’ll have a great weekend and happy reading.
Emily @ Budget Tales Book Blog
It sounds like a tough family time. My mum had it with my grandparents a few years ago.
I hope that you have a good rest of the weekend.

I am sorry it was a hard week. We got the news a little ways back that my mom’s cancer is terminal. She has a year, maybe two. I hate that it feels like we are waiting on her to die, while trying to see her as much as we can (we live in different states), but she is also stubborn and doesn’t want company very often or to talk on the phone…She will be 71 next month, and while it is never easy to lose a parent, it is also weird to think of them dying so young. My mom refuses to let people go to appointments and stuff with her, but may change when things get worse. I know caretaking is draining and I do hope you are able to get rest as well. Have a great rest of your weekend.

Thanks Cindy. I am so sorry about your Mom. It must be very difficult living so far away. Take care.
Deb Nance at Readerbuzz
Sending you and all who are caring for others warm thoughts and prayers. It’s so hard to do this, and I greatly admire those who can do this.
I like the sound of The Incredible Kindness of Paper.

Thank you Deb. Your kind words mean a lot.

I’m so sorry that you are in this situation. And I know a bit how it feels as my wonderful mother is smitten by osteoporosis – an dreadful disease which has all but crippled her. She’s 88 and otherwise as fit as a flea but for the fact her skeleton is crumbling. And she’s dealing with the whole business with such dignity and courage. Luckily she and my step-father are able to live independently, but I’m aware there will come a time when they will probably need help. Take care and know you are in my thoughtsx

Thanks Sarah. Your kind words mean a lot to me.

On a lighter note – I also came across the Leanne series and gobbled it up. It was SUCH fun! I’m hoping they’ll do another season.

Hooray Sarah! I hope they do too.
Erin @ Cracker Crumb Life
I am sorry that you all are walking through this right now. Caregiving and family illness is such a hard road. I hope that you can find time for yourself and to rest when you can, although I know how hard that is. Sending you good vibes and prayers.

Your parents are lucky to have you. Take care of yourself too. I have had to learn a lot to help my daughter with all her issues.

Thank you Anne.
Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature)
I’m right there with you on the taking care of parents part of our lives. My mom is saying she feels like a burden and I have to keep telling her she’s not, I want to be there for her. She’s always been there when I’ve needed her. But she’s dealing with the loss of my stepdad last, her husband of almost 50 years, and now lots of her own health issues. And I’m dealing with my own mental issues right now, so it’s just a lot of emotions all around.
But you got some good books this week it looks like! Hope you have a good week and that your parents are doing well.

I’m sorry that things are so stressful for you right now Lisa. Take care.

You are so strong and thoughtful, Jodie. I’m glad you are making time to take care of yourself. I hope you and your husband enjoy your time together and the beautiful weather. Have a great week!

Thank you Winnie. You too!

I agree, Jodie. It is hard, but we do what we can. When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, she was only 70 and it was tough. We did what we could and spent as much time as we could with her. Sadly, she passed only 7 months later. You are doing wonderfully supporting your family. I hope you enjoyed your dinner out (if you’ve already gone). Your weather sounds a lot like ours. Hot and steamy, but with rain here and there. It has cooled down the last couple of days and I’ve been able to sleep with my windows open. Enjoy your new additions.

Thanks Carla. The west coast doesn’t get the humidity you do in Ontario. Much more pleasant IMHO.
