Summary:
Artist Eden Fox is poised for success when her life is suddenly upended. After returning from a run, she finds her key no longer works, a stranger who looks just like her living in her home, and her husband insisting the other woman is his real wife. Six months earlier, a solitary Londoner named Birdy inherits the same seaside home, Spyglass, from a grandmother she never knew. But when Birdy visits a mysterious clinic that predicts her date of death, dark secrets begin to surface. As past and present collide, the truth behind Spyglass and its occupants twists into a chilling tale of identity, obsession, and deceit—where nothing, and no one, is what they seem.
My Thoughts:
What a book. I truly needed a good distraction right now, and My Husband’s Wife completely delivered. From the first few minutes of the audiobook, I was utterly engrossed — this was a five-star read (and listen) for me.
The story begins with Eden Fox, an artist on the brink of her big break, returning from a run to find her life unravelling. Her key no longer fits, a woman who looks eerily like her answers the door, and her husband insists that she is his wife. Six months earlier, we meet Birdy, a reclusive Londoner who inherits the same house — Spyglass — after a life-changing diagnosis, and whose discovery of a shadowy clinic that claims to predict a person’s date of death sets unsettling events into motion. One house. One husband. Two women. Someone is lying.
There is a lot going on here, in the best possible way. The multiple POVs are expertly handled, and Alice Feeney sets the stage for each character with such confidence and control. The idea that a company could predict the exact date of your death is deeply unsettling on its own, and when combined with questions of identity, obsession, and truth, the tension never lets up. At times, I genuinely didn’t know what to believe — especially as the mystery deepens and the story introduces even more unsettling elements. I won’t give anything away, but I will say that the suspense is relentless.
Feeney’s ability to craft a twisty, atmospheric thriller is second to none. Just when you think you’ve found your footing, the ground shifts again. I was hooked right through to the final moments.
The Narration:
If you want to elevate the experience even further, I highly recommend the audiobook. The production is outstanding, with subtle sound effects that enhance the tension without overpowering the story, and a cast of narrators who deliver one of the best performances I’ve heard in an audiobook. Truly exceptional. Do yourself a favour and listen to this one.
Final Thoughts:
My Husband’s Wife is a gripping, mind-bending thriller that kept me guessing from start to finish — and exactly the kind of book I didn’t know how much I needed.
