My Thoughts:
Each year, I look forward to reading Fern Michaels’ holiday book, as she writes such emotional stories set in international destinations. A Season of Secrets might just be my favourite yet! It’s a beautiful, heartwarming holiday story about family, secrets, and unexpected connections, with just the right amount of humour to balance the more emotional moments.
Ashley Chandler has always believed she was the biological child of her parents, so when she took an ancestry test in college and discovered that she wasn’t biologically related to either of them, she was understandably caught off guard. Unsure what to make of the results, she dismissed them and never brought them up with her parents. Years later, when Ashley graduates from college and secures a research position at Oxford, her parents decide it’s finally time to share the truth. Ashley was adopted as a baby, and her birth family is in England.
I thoroughly enjoyed following Ashley and her mother as they travelled to England to spend the Christmas holidays before Ashley began her new position in January. I loved the descriptions of the places they visited and the festive celebrations they experienced along the way. Fern Michaels does a wonderful job of capturing the magic of Christmas in London, making this story feel like a holiday getaway of my own!
Meanwhile, we’re introduced to another family and a mystery of their own. Emily discovers that she has a twin sister and eventually learns the truth about her family’s past. Her father, Henry, has been on the run for a decade after witnessing a murder and becoming implicated in the crime. This adds an intriguing layer of mystery to the story, as his absence has affected the family for years.
I loved the way Ashley and Emily’s stories intersect and how their respective families become part of an extraordinary journey of discovery. The themes of family, forgiveness, and second chances are woven throughout the story, making it an emotional and satisfying holiday read. I was drawn in from the very beginning and loved every moment of it. Between the family secrets, unexpected revelations, festive atmosphere, and heartwarming connections, this is a story that reminded me why I look forward to Fern Michaels’ holiday books each year.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Mia Barron, who delivered a wonderful performance. She did an excellent job of distinguishing the many characters through her use of different voices, and her storytelling brought the story to life. I felt her narration enhanced the entire listening experience and made this heartwarming holiday story even more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts:
A Season of Secrets is a delightful combination of family drama, mystery, humour, and Christmas magic. With its beautiful London setting and touching story of long-lost family connections, it’s a wonderful choice for anyone looking for an emotional, feel-good holiday audiobook. This may just be my favourite Fern Michaels holiday book yet, and I highly recommend adding it to your seasonal listening list!
