My Thoughts:

I’m a big fan of 1960s historical fiction, so when I read the synopsis for An Infinite Love Story, I knew I had to read it. Chanel Cleeton beautifully captures a fascinating and pivotal moment in history, when the United States was racing to be the first country to send a space capsule around the moon and, ultimately, put a man on the moon. But beneath the excitement and national pride is a much more complicated question: was the race to be first moving too quickly, potentially putting the astronauts—and the families waiting anxiously at home—at risk?

The story unfolds in a compelling then-and-now timeline. In the present, Vivian receives the devastating knock at the door after her husband, Joe, is launched into space and his spacecraft loses contact with mission control. As she tries to process the possibility that Joe is gone, we travel back through their relationship, from the moment they first meet to the final moments before his launch. Vivian is understandably reluctant to fall in love with a man whose career puts his life in constant danger, particularly because she lost her father as a child. Her fears are never far from the surface, making the stakes of her relationship with Joe feel all the more real.

Cleeton does an excellent job of creating a beautiful and deeply emotional romance. The magnetism between Vivian and Joe is palpable, even as circumstances and their own choices continually threaten to pull them apart. Their love story also explores the sacrifices that come with being married to an astronaut. Vivian, once a journalist with ambitions of her own, gradually finds herself defining her life around Joe’s career and becoming what she believes an astronaut wife is expected to be: a caretaker waiting at home. Over time, that sacrifice creates resentment and tension in their marriage. Joe, too, struggles with the choice between embracing his extraordinary career as an astronaut and longing for the ordinary life he could have with the woman he loves. I thought Cleeton handled these conflicting emotions particularly well.

The Narration:

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Kelli Tager and Barton Caplan, and it was a wonderful listening experience. Barton Caplan’s voice is heard only briefly and is altered to reflect Joe’s time after launch, while Kelli Tager gives a spectacular performance as Vivian. She captures the full depth of Vivian’s emotions—from the excitement and passion of falling in love to the fear, grief, frustration and hope that follow—and brought her character to life beautifully.

Final Thoughts:

An Infinite Love Story is more than a love story set against the backdrop of the Space Race. It’s also a thoughtful exploration of ambition, sacrifice, marriage and the human cost of being first. I loved the combination of historical fiction, romance and mystery, and Vivian and Joe’s story stayed with me long after I finished listening. If you enjoy emotional historical fiction with a sweeping romance at its heart, this is one I would definitely recommend.
