Summary:
After losing everything and being forced out of her New York apartment, struggling author Holly Sinclair returns to her family’s rundown beach house in a coastal New England town determined to write a bestselling novel and rebuild her life. As she reconnects with the community, she finds unexpected support from a determined Realtor, a helpful handyman, and a psychic who warns of looming danger, while secretly sheltering Jade, a runaway teen seeking safety and a fresh start. When Jade begins working for the influential but troubled Carmichael family—whose history is tied to Holly’s own past—long-buried secrets begin to surface. With someone in town watching her closely and hidden truths threatening to resurface, Holly realizes that escaping the past may be impossible as danger draws ever closer.
My Thoughts:
Jamie Day’s Beach Thriller was a fascinating read that kept me engaged from beginning to end. One of my favourite aspects was its use of a frame narrative, a storytelling technique I hadn’t encountered before. I loved that the book within the book shared the same title as the novel itself, adding an extra layer of intrigue and creativity to the story.
Holly Sinclair is a struggling author who is running low on both money and inspiration. After being evicted from her New York apartment, she returns to her hometown of Beauport and her late mother’s rundown beach house, hoping to reinvent herself and write a book that will finally sell. In a town small enough for everyone to know everyone else’s business, Holly quickly becomes entangled in old memories, lingering secrets, and new relationships.
The story is told through multiple points of view, which worked exceptionally well. Gail, the local real estate agent, helps Holly connect with a handyman to restore the house. Serena, a psychic, warns Holly that danger is on the horizon. Jade, a teenage runaway hiding in Holly’s attic, becomes an important part of the story. The house itself is filled with memories, including those of Holly’s younger sister Anna, whose suspicious death many years earlier continues to cast a shadow over the present. Adding to the tension is “The Watcher,” an anonymous voice whose observations created a constant sense of unease and significantly amped up the creepy factor.
I thoroughly enjoyed the beach-town setting, the well-developed characters, and the layered backstories that gradually revealed themselves throughout the novel. The mystery surrounding the identity of The Watcher kept me guessing the entire way through, and the book-within-a-book structure added an extra dimension that made the story stand out from other thrillers I’ve read.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend that format. The multiple points of view were brought to life by an ensemble cast, which was essential in translating the story from page to audio. Each narrator had a distinct and enjoyable voice, making it easy to follow the different perspectives while adding depth and personality to the characters.
Final Thoughts:
Beach Thriller is an engaging, atmospheric mystery filled with secrets, suspense, and memorable characters, and it was a very enjoyable listening experience.
