Summary:
After surviving a traumatic car accident, Roz and Vin’s once-happy marriage has fractured, leaving them barely able to speak a year later and heading toward separation when Vin signs a new lease. Desperate to move forward, Roz throws herself into a figure drawing class and leans on adventures with her best friend Raffi—who happens to be Vin’s younger brother—while trying to ignore the heartbreak unfolding at home. When Vin unexpectedly offers to pose for her, the intimacy they’ve been avoiding forces them to truly see each other again, confronting grief, attraction, and unspoken pain. As Roz grows as an artist and reconnects with the man she fell in love with, both must decide whether they can face their buried feelings and heal together, or finally let go.
My Thoughts:
Sometimes love really does send you back to the drawing board, and No Matter What by Cara Bastone captures that idea with warmth, humour, and emotional honesty. This charming second-chance romance follows a married couple trying to reconnect after a devastating accident changes the course of their lives. Although part of the Dial Delights series, I read it as a standalone and never felt lost.
A year after surviving a traumatic accident, Roz and Vin are living parallel lives under the same roof, unable to face each other or the grief they carry. When Roz discovers Vin has signed a new lease, she assumes their marriage is truly over and signs up for a figure-drawing class as a distraction. Supported by her loyal best friend Raffi—who also happens to be Vin’s younger brother and a fellow survivor of the accident—Roz begins rebuilding a sense of self. The story takes a tender and unexpectedly intimate turn when Vin offers to pose as her model, forcing both of them to confront memories from before the accident and the emotions they’ve carefully avoided.
What I loved most about this novel is how beautifully Bastone balances emotion with gentle comedy. Through alternating moments of vulnerability, nostalgia, and humour, we watch a marriage shaped by miscommunication slowly rediscover honesty and connection. As Roz and Vin finally begin to talk about how the accident affected them individually and as a couple, they start to see each other—not as strangers shaped by trauma—but as the people they first fell in love with. The characters feel incredibly real, deeply human, and impossible not to root for.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook edition narrated by Alex Finke, who does a wonderful job bringing warmth, nuance, and emotional depth to the story. Her performance enhances both the humour and the heartbreak, making the listening experience especially immersive.
Final Thoughts:
No Matter What is ultimately a story about healing, communication, and choosing love again—even when it feels fragile. Tender, hopeful, and deeply satisfying, this is a romance that quietly stays with you long after the final chapter.
