Summary:
Jax prides herself on being in control, though the only thing she truly runs is the Painted Lady Bookstore, a Victorian mansion she inherited, while the rest of her life spins beyond her grasp—her ex is getting engaged for dubious reasons, her sister Ryleigh plans to move away to find a husband, and the charming contractor Jax recruits to make Ryleigh stay seems far more interested in Jax herself. Her orderly world unravels further when an accident wipes the names from the shop’s lockboxes of townspeople’s diaries, leaving her no choice but to read them to return them, unleashing secrets, scandals, and small-town chaos that ultimately force Jax to confront the possibility that surrendering control—especially to the right unexpected man—might be exactly what she needs.
My Thoughts:
I’ve always had a soft spot for stories about sisters and bookstores, so I went into The Bookstore Diaries with high expectations—and I’m happy to say it delivered exactly the kind of heartfelt, engaging read I was hoping for. Jax is the kind of heroine who likes to keep every detail of her life under control, from running the Painted Lady Bookstore she inherited to carefully managing the people she loves, including her sister Ryleigh and even her ex as they co-parent their kids. When a renovation project with the charming contractor Marcus accidentally wipes the identifying marks off the bookstore’s secret diary lockboxes, Jax is forced into the deliciously messy task of reading them to match each diary to its owner, and that’s when the story truly sparkles.
I loved the dynamic between Jax and Ryleigh—there’s warmth, tension, and genuine sisterly devotion—and I was equally invested in Ryleigh’s dilemma about whether to chase a new life elsewhere or stay where her heart may already belong. But the real scene-stealer for me was Ramon, Jax’s grey parrot, who doesn’t just mimic words but seems to understand exactly what’s happening around him, offering perfectly timed phrases and affection that made me smile every time he appeared.
The pacing felt just right, and the author’s signature blend of humour, emotion, and family drama kept me fully engaged without ever feeling heavy.
The Narration:
The audiobook narration by Tanya Eby was also a highlight—her slightly unusual cadence took a moment to get used to, but she brings such distinct, believable voices to each character that I quickly forgot about it and just enjoyed the performance.
Final Thoughts:
The Bookstore Diaries was a warm, charming read that reminded me why I keep coming back to this author’s books whenever I’m craving something heartfelt and comforting.

Great review, Jodie. I was worried because I read another review that said the diaries weren’t really explored and that the title was misleading. I’m glad to hear you didn’t feel that way. I hope to listen to this one sometime this week.

The diaries were not at the forefront as suggested by the title but they did play a part of the story.
