Dear Debbie is a dark, twisty thriller about an advice columnist unraveling, family secrets, and revenge you won’t see coming.

Length: ~ 8 hours.
Narrator: Julia Whelan, January LaVoy, Scott Brick.
Genre: Mysteries, Thrillers & Suspense

Summary:
Debbie Mullen has spent years offering wisdom and compassion through her “Dear Debbie” advice column, helping women deal with neglectful and abusive husbands. But when her own life begins to unravel—she loses her job, her daughters act out, and her husband’s secrets come to light—Debbie finally reaches her breaking point. Tired of always being the voice of reason, she decides it’s time to follow her own advice and take matters into her own hands, setting out on a path of revenge that no one sees coming.
My Thoughts:
Sometimes a thriller hooks you with plot — and sometimes it hooks you with character. Dear Debbie absolutely does both. Debbie Mullen has spent years dispensing calm, compassionate advice through her Dear Debbie column, helping women navigate difficult marriages and messy lives. But when the story opens, it’s clear something has shifted. Debbie is coming apart at the seams, and it shows in her increasingly dark, biting responses to readers — a change that ultimately costs her her job. As her personal life spirals — a secretive husband, troubling behaviour from her teenage daughters, and shadows from her own past — Debbie reaches her breaking point and decides she’s done being reasonable. Enough is enough.
This was my first book by Freida McFadden, but it definitely won’t be my last. The story is tightly plotted, fast-moving, and packed with twists that land at just the right moments. It’s the kind of thriller that keeps you saying “just one more chapter” until suddenly you’re finished. I especially loved Debbie as a character — she’s intellectual, layered, and fiercely protective of her family, but also unpredictable in a way that makes every scene feel charged. You understand her even when you’re not sure you should trust her, which makes the ride even better.
The Narration:
The audiobook is truly a standout. The full cast delivers a powerhouse performance that adds extra tension and personality to every perspective. The narration elevates the suspense and makes the emotional beats hit even harder.
Final Thoughts:
If you enjoy psychological thrillers with bite, momentum, and a strong central voice, this is one you’ll want to pick up — or even better, listen to.

Wonderful review, Jodie. I know you don’t read a lot of thrillers, so I’m happy that you enjoyed this one. I have read and enjoyed several of her books. My library hold came up yesterday, so I will be listening to this one soon.
