Summary:
When Sybil Rain cashes in her long-expired honeymoon vouchers for a solo escape to the tropical Starling Ranch Inn, the last thing she expects is to run into her ex-fiancé Jamie—who left her at the altar and is now scoping out the resort for his family’s business, accompanied by a stunning “colleague.” In a flustered attempt to save face, Sybil claims she’s there with her boyfriend—just as her second ex-fiancé, Sebastian, conveniently arrives and plays along. As Sybil navigates awkward run-ins, romantic misfires, and the emotional baggage of three failed engagements—including the mysterious first, Liam—she begins to question whether she’s finally ready to move forward and open her heart to a lasting love.
My Thoughts:
As Sybil Rain approaches what would’ve been her one-year wedding anniversary, she decides to put her unused honeymoon hotel vouchers to good use and heads off—solo—to the stunning Starling Ranch Inn in Maui. What’s supposed to be a relaxing escape quickly turns chaotic when her ex-fiancé Jamie shows up…with a new woman in tow. In a flustered attempt to save face, Sybil claims she’s there with her boyfriend. Cue Sebastian—another former fiancé—who happens to arrive on the island and is more than happy to play along. Toss in tropical cocktails, awkward run-ins, and a bit of emotional reckoning, and you’ve got a vacation Sybil (and the reader) won’t soon forget.
I had so much fun with this story. The Maui setting delivers exactly the kind of warm, breezy escapism I love, and the island vibe—from snorkelling adventures to spa visits and beachside parties—truly transported me. Sybil is such a dynamic character, and it was satisfying to see her take this unexpected journey not just with her exes, but with herself. Over the course of the novel, we get to see her reflect on the choices she’s made and the reasons behind her failed engagements—especially the one she doesn’t talk about. Watching her come into her own was one of the best parts of the book.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Cherami Leigh, who was an excellent match for Sybil’s vibrant, free-spirited personality. Her lively performance added a fun and heartfelt energy to the story. The touches of Hawaiian music at the beginning and end were a lovely bonus, and I always appreciate when those kinds of atmospheric details are woven in.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re in the mood for a sun-soaked romantic comedy with heart, humour, and a heroine worth rooting for, The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain is a delightful pick.
