Summary:
When Sybil Rain cashes in her long-expired honeymoon vouchers for a solo escape to the tropical Starling Ranch Inn, the last thing she expects is to run into her ex-fiancĆ© Jamieāwho left her at the altar and is now scoping out the resort for his familyās business, accompanied by a stunning ācolleague.ā In a flustered attempt to save face, Sybil claims sheās there with her boyfriendājust as her second ex-fiancĆ©, Sebastian, conveniently arrives and plays along. As Sybil navigates awkward run-ins, romantic misfires, and the emotional baggage of three failed engagementsāincluding the mysterious first, Liamāshe begins to question whether sheās finally ready to move forward and open her heart to a lasting love.
My Thoughts:
As Sybil Rain approaches what wouldāve been her one-year wedding anniversary, she decides to put her unused honeymoon hotel vouchers to good use and heads offāsoloāto the stunning Starling Ranch Inn in Maui. Whatās supposed to be a relaxing escape quickly turns chaotic when her ex-fiancĆ© Jamie shows upā¦with a new woman in tow. In a flustered attempt to save face, Sybil claims sheās there with her boyfriend. Cue Sebastianāanother former fiancĆ©āwho happens to arrive on the island and is more than happy to play along. Toss in tropical cocktails, awkward run-ins, and a bit of emotional reckoning, and youāve got a vacation Sybil (and the reader) wonāt soon forget.
I had so much fun with this story. The Maui setting delivers exactly the kind of warm, breezy escapism I love, and the island vibeāfrom snorkelling adventures to spa visits and beachside partiesātruly transported me. Sybil is such a dynamic character, and it was satisfying to see her take this unexpected journey not just with her exes, but with herself. Over the course of the novel, we get to see her reflect on the choices sheās made and the reasons behind her failed engagementsāespecially the one she doesnāt talk about. Watching her come into her own was one of the best parts of the book.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Cherami Leigh, who was an excellent match for Sybilās vibrant, free-spirited personality. Her lively performance added a fun and heartfelt energy to the story. The touches of Hawaiian music at the beginning and end were a lovely bonus, and I always appreciate when those kinds of atmospheric details are woven in.
Final Thoughts:
If youāre in the mood for a sun-soaked romantic comedy with heart, humour, and a heroine worth rooting for, The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain is a delightful pick.
