Summary:
The Nantucket Christmas Stroll brings holiday magic to the island, with festive decorations, carolers, Santa’s arrival and bustling streets filled with holidaymakers. At the centre of the celebration is the Parsons family, who gather for their annual Christmas house party as parents Brick and Jane welcome their three adult children home for the holidays. Lydia is struggling to balance her successful career in New York with a new relationship, Florie is torn between love and the prospect of moving to Wisconsin with her poet boyfriend, and Lucas is anxious about revealing his unexpected career change to his father. As the family reconnects with old friends and former loves during the Stroll, long-held secrets and complicated emotions threaten to overshadow the festivities, but amid champagne, Christmas treats and sparkling celebrations, the Parsons discover that family and love can make even the most challenging holiday season brighter.
My Thoughts:
I always enjoy returning to books set in Nantucket, particularly those that take place during the Christmas season. The annual Nantucket Christmas Stroll sounds like such a wonderful event, and I love reading about the festive decorations, holiday traditions and activities that bring the island to life. In Nantucket Christmas Stroll, Nancy Thayer introduces us to the Parsons family, who gather for their annual celebration during Stroll week.
Brick and Jane Parsons are looking forward to welcoming their three adult children, Lydia, Florence (Florie) and Lucas, along with their partners. Brick’s father is also part of the festivities, making this a special family gathering. However, there are a few complications beneath the holiday cheer. Brick and Jane are keeping a secret that gradually comes to light, while each of their children is dealing with decisions that could change their lives. Lydia is torn between her career and her relationship with her wealthy boyfriend, Florie is contemplating a move to Wisconsin to be with her poet boyfriend, and Lucas is nervous about telling his father about an unexpected change in his career plans.
I enjoyed listening to Nantucket Christmas Stroll, and the story was entertaining, but it didn’t quite capture the emotional connection I’ve experienced with many of Nancy Thayer’s earlier books. My favourite part was the description of Stroll week. The festive activities, beautiful decorations and holiday atmosphere were easy to envision, and I loved getting a glimpse of the island during this special time of year.
One small detail that bothered me more than it probably should have was the repeated reference to Brick as Brick 3 (not Brick the third). I understand that he is the third generation of men in his family to carry the name, and that this ties into the importance of the family business and its history, but I didn’t feel that the distinction added much to the overall story.
The Audiobook:
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Nikki Zakocs, who did a lovely job bringing the story to life. She has a pleasant tone and is very easy to listen to, making this an enjoyable audiobook experience.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Nantucket Christmas Stroll is an entertaining holiday read with a charming setting, family relationships and plenty of Christmas atmosphere. Although it wasn’t a favourite of mine from this author, I still enjoyed my return to Nantucket and its festive Christmas traditions.
