Summary:
When Charlotte Sitterly’s husband is arrested for a white-collar crime, she and her daughter Iris are locked out of their house and thrust into the spotlight of @JuniperShoresSocialite, the town’s snarky anonymous Instagram account. Cut off from her bank accounts, Charlotte accepts an offer to stay at a beachfront former B&B turned communal home for single mothers in a small North Carolina town. Despite their difficult circumstances, Charlotte and Iris find unexpected joy and connection with the other families. But when the women uncover a secret link between them, they’re forced to question whether their bond was a coincidence or fate—and whether the truth will strengthen their newfound sisterhood or tear it apart.
My Thoughts:
I’ve always loved stories that celebrate the strength and resilience of women facing adversity—and Beach House Rules delivers this in spades. Kristy Woodson Harvey, known for her warm and uplifting Southern fiction, has crafted a moving tale of friendship, family, and second chances, set in a charming coastal North Carolina town.
The story begins with Charlotte Sitterly, whose life is upended when her husband is arrested for white-collar crimes. With her bank accounts frozen and their home locked down by the FBI, Charlotte is left scrambling to find shelter for herself and her teenage daughter, Iris. Salvation arrives in the form of Alice, an acquaintance with a mysterious reputation—dubbed “the Black Widow” for her tragic marital history—who offers them a place to stay at her beachfront former bed-and-breakfast.
What Charlotte and Iris discover there is nothing short of life-changing: a welcoming community of single mothers and their children who have banded together in what they affectionately call the “mommune.” I absolutely loved the idea of this supportive household—women helping women, forging new friendships, and creating an unconventional family unit. The camaraderie and warmth among the women were heartening, and it was wonderful to watch both Charlotte and Iris begin to heal and thrive in this new environment.
The author does a lovely job weaving in the backstories of each character, though the novel primarily centres on Charlotte, Iris, and Alice. I particularly enjoyed seeing Alice’s character evolve and learning the reasons behind her decision to create the mommune. Iris’s experiences also stood out to me—she quickly finds friendship (and perhaps a budding romance!) with the local high school quarterback, which added a sweet coming-of-age element to the story.
The beachside setting adds its own layer of charm to the book, and I couldn’t help but smile at the cheeky posts from the anonymous @JuniperShoresSocialite Instagram account, which kept the small-town gossip mill spinning and added a light, playful tone throughout.
Above all, it was the sense of family and empowerment that truly resonated with me. The conclusion was heartfelt and satisfying—exactly what I had hoped for.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook version, which featured an ensemble cast. The narration was excellent, with each of the three main characters given their own distinct voices that brought their perspectives to life beautifully.
Final Thoughts:
Beach House Rules is perfect for anyone who enjoys stories of female friendship, resilience, and hope. Highly recommended for your summer reading list!
