Summary:
After college, five close friends make a tradition of reuniting for one week each summer at a beach house on the California coast, bound by a pact that no one in the group will date each other. But Everett and Sutton secretly break the rule, carrying on an on-again, off-again romance that ultimately ends in heartbreak. Five years later, they’re forced back together when a recently divorced friend invites the group to reunite at the beach house. As old traditions, shared memories, and lingering feelings resurface, Sutton finds herself drawn once again to the man she never truly got over. Faced with the possibility of a second chance, she must decide whether risking her heart—and the fragile harmony of their friendship circle—is worth breaking the rules all over again.
My Thoughts:
Summer People by Sally Blakely is a heartfelt second-chance romance that beautifully explores the changing nature of friendship, love, and the people we hold onto as we move through different stages of life. Centred around five college friends who reunite each summer at the same California beach house, the story effortlessly blends nostalgia, longing, and the bittersweet reality that even the strongest friendships evolve over time.
Told through a well-executed dual “then” and “now” timeline, the novel gradually reveals the forbidden romance between Sutton and Everett, whose undeniable chemistry is impossible to ignore. Their attraction practically leaps off the page, and I loved how the author carefully revealed pieces of their history at just the right moments. The pacing kept me invested, allowing the emotional impact of their relationship to build naturally until everything fell into place.
The story gave me Same Time, Next Year vibes with its annual reunions, nostalgic beach setting, and the emotional pull of trying to preserve the friendships that define our youth. As the years pass, the shifting dynamics within the group feel authentic, highlighting how relationships change with time and experience. Alongside the romance, themes of forgiveness, growth, and learning to let go of the past add even more emotional depth.
For me, Sutton and Everett were unquestionably the heart of the novel. Their relationship carried the story, delivering plenty of tension, heartfelt moments, and satisfying emotional payoff. Combined with the sun-soaked beach atmosphere, this made for an emotional, chemistry-filled read that was easy to become immersed in.
The Narration:
I listened to the audiobook, which was wonderfully narrated by Patti Murin. She captures the emotional nuances of each character beautifully, adding warmth and depth to an already engaging story. Her performance enhanced the experience and made this one I’d happily recommend in audio format.
Final Thoughts:
If you’re looking for an emotional second-chance romance filled with beach vibes, lifelong friendships, and a love story that unfolds with perfect timing, Summer People is a wonderful summer read.
