Summary:
At her family’s cherished cottage in Summerland Cove, Maine, Lindy plans a milestone summer filled with celebrations—her husband David’s fiftieth birthday, her parents’ golden anniversary, and her daughter Hailey’s wedding. But when David mysteriously disappears before his own party, the family is thrown into turmoil, fearing everything from an accident to an affair as the days pass without answers. As Lindy struggles to hold her nearly grown children together, long-buried family secrets begin to surface, her parents face their own challenges, and Hailey questions whether she should go through with her wedding at all. Set against the evocative backdrop of coastal Maine, the novel explores marriage, motherhood, and the complicated histories that shape one imperfect yet deeply connected family.
My Thoughts:
There’s something especially compelling about a novel that blends family drama with a touch of mystery, and Summerland Cove by Ellen Baker does exactly that. Set against the beautiful backdrop of coastal Maine, this multi-generational family story feels authentic from beginning to end, with plenty of emotion, secrets, and drama woven throughout.
The story is told through the perspectives of three generations of women—Greta, Lindy, and Hailey—and I thought the multiple points of view worked exceptionally well. Greta is quietly carrying several secrets about both her past and present, determined to keep them hidden until after her granddaughter Hailey’s upcoming wedding. Meanwhile, Lindy is looking forward to a memorable summer at the family cottage in Summerland Cove, a place filled with treasured childhood memories. She has carefully planned a series of celebrations, including her husband David’s fiftieth birthday, her parents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary, and Hailey’s wedding. When David unexpectedly fails to arrive at the cottage, what should have been a joyful summer quickly turns into every family’s worst nightmare.
The uncertainty surrounding David’s disappearance creates a constant feeling of tension. Ellen Baker captures the anguish of waiting for news remarkably well, especially considering David’s complicated personal history. Lindy’s children are unaware of that history, and with Hailey’s wedding fast approaching, she struggles with how much she should reveal. As the days pass without answers from the police or local hospitals, some family members decide to begin searching for him themselves, while long-buried family secrets gradually come to light.
What I enjoyed most was how layered this story became. While the mystery keeps the pages turning, it’s ultimately the family relationships that take centre stage. I became completely invested in these characters and genuinely felt the worry, heartbreak, and hope they experienced throughout the novel. Their relationships felt believable and imperfect, making the emotional moments all the more impactful.
The Narration:
I also thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook, which was beautifully narrated by Jane Oppenheimer, Rebekkah Ross, and Robin Siegerman. Each narrator fully embodied her character, making Greta, Lindy, and Hailey feel distinct and authentic. Their performances drew me into the story from the very beginning, and I found myself looking forward to every opportunity to keep listening.
Final Thoughts:
Summerland Cove is a beautifully written novel about family, love, loss, and the secrets that can shape generations. With its engaging mystery, richly developed characters, and evocative coastal Maine setting, this is a story that stayed with me long after it ended. It’s one I’ll be highly recommending to readers who enjoy emotional family dramas with a compelling mystery at their heart.
