Summary:
Naomi thought she had the perfect life—a loving marriage, a beautiful home, and a family straight out of a fairy-tale ending—until her husband abruptly leaves her for a much younger woman, empties their accounts, and uses top divorce lawyers to force her out. Refusing to accept the collapse of everything she built, Naomi becomes increasingly fixated on her husband’s new girlfriend, and what begins as curiosity spirals into a dangerous obsession. As she uncovers disturbing secrets and finds herself drawn into a web of deception, Naomi must decide how far she is willing to go to protect the life she believes should have been hers.
My Thoughts:
I’ve quickly come to consider Freida McFadden an auto-read author because she has an incredible talent for crafting twisty, well-executed thrillers that constantly keep me guessing. The Divorce is no exception—in fact, it may be one of my favourites yet.
Naomi believes she’s living the life she always dreamed of with a devoted husband and an adorable five-year-old son, so when her husband suddenly changes the locks on their home and concocts a story about surprise renovations, she has no reason to suspect her world is about to fall apart. Instead, she’s blindsided by a devastating betrayal that leaves her questioning everything she thought she knew. As her curiosity about her husband’s much younger new girlfriend grows into an unhealthy obsession, the story spirals into a web of secrets, lies, manipulation, and danger that had me hooked from beginning to end.
Told through multiple points of view, the novel delivers one surprise after another, revealing just enough information at exactly the right moments to keep the pages turning. I loved how thoroughly each character was developed, and my feelings toward them shifted constantly as new revelations came to light. Every time I thought I had the mystery figured out, McFadden expertly pulled the rug out from under me. It was an emotional, addictive read that was incredibly difficult to put down.
The Narration:
I experienced The Divorce as an audiobook, and the narration elevated the story even further. January LaVoy, Edoardo Ballerini, and Marin Ireland each brought their characters to life with performances that heightened the suspense and made the emotional moments even more impactful.
Final Thoughts:
If you enjoy psychological thrillers packed with shocking twists and unreliable characters, I can’t recommend this audiobook highly enough.
