The Romance Revival by Christina Lauren Review: Can Love Survive Without Memory?

Summary of Synopsis:

My Thoughts:

The Romance Revival has a different feel from the many other Christina Lauren books I’ve read, and I really enjoyed the change of pace. With elements of mystery and science fiction woven throughout the story, this is more than just a romance. It combines an amnesia trope with a second-chance love story in a way that felt fresh, emotional and surprisingly thought-provoking.

Emery and Luca meet in Las Vegas and, after a whirlwind romance, are married just two months later. Three years into their marriage, though, things aren’t quite as perfect as they once were. Emery is a medical doctor who has dedicated much of her life to top-secret medical research—work she isn’t even legally allowed to discuss with Luca. Her demanding, workaholic lifestyle has begun to take a toll on their relationship, despite the passion and love they still share.

Then tragedy strikes. After witnessing a devastating accident that leaves Luca fighting for his life, Emery refuses to lose him the way she lost her parents years earlier. She takes matters into her own hands, and while Luca survives, he wakes up without any memory of his life before the accident—including Emery, their marriage and the love they shared.

The story is told through a dual narrative, which worked particularly well here because it gave me a deeper understanding of both Emery and Luca and what they were experiencing. As Emery cares for Luca and slowly introduces him to the life they once shared, she has to hope that he will trust her enough to fall in love with her all over again. I loved watching that relationship develop for a second time, and there were plenty of tender and heartwarming moments along the way. There are also some more passionate scenes that I found easy enough to skip over.

But there’s more at stake than simply rebuilding their relationship. When the company Emery works for discovers what she has done, she could jeopardize the career and research she has devoted her life to. I was curious to see how everything would unfold and whether Emery’s desperate attempt to save Luca would ultimately cost her everything else.

The Narration:

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by two of my favourites, Julia Whelan and Vas Eli, and I thoroughly enjoyed their performances. Julia really brought Emery’s character to life and captured the scientist side of her personality so well, while Vas’ gorgeous Italian accent was an absolute delight. I would definitely recommend the audiobook if you’re planning to pick this one up.

Final Thoughts:

The Romance Revival was a unique and emotional take on the second-chance romance. It explores love, loss, memory and the question of whether two people can find their way back to each other when everything they shared has been erased. A different kind of Christina Lauren romance, but one I’m very glad I read.
