My Week:
It’s been another busy week. I’m working on arranging home care for my parents, and just when it feels like we’re making progress, another setback comes along. Both Mom and Dad are dealing with health challenges right now, and with her activity restrictions, I’m doing my best to step in. I go over a couple of times a day for a few hours at a time. While I truly value this time with them, it’s also exhausting.
This week we spent more than two hours waiting in a specialist’s office for Dad’s appointment — an ordeal that left both him and Mom drained. Next week looks just as full, with another visit to the same specialist, plus Dad’s lab work and chemo sessions. Busy times indeed.
The weather has added its own twist. For most of the week, it felt almost like fall, but by Friday we were back to another stretch of hot summer days. What’s hard to miss, though, is how quickly the daylight is fading. We’re losing about five minutes a day now — one of the toughest parts of heading into fall and winter.
Books I’ve Added to My Shelves This Week:
From Publishers, Netgalley, & Libro.fm: I have one audiobook still pending.
From The Library:
In Clare Pooley’s new ensemble comedy, a senior citizens’ centre and a daycare collide with hilarious results. When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club, she expects quiet afternoons of tea and cards, but instead finds a colourful cast of characters, from Art, a kleptomaniac former actor, to Daphne, who hides a dark past, and Ruby, a rebellious knitter with a flair for revenge. When the city council threatens to sell their community centre, the seniors team up with the daycare next door, a teenage father, and a geriatric dog to save it, using unorthodox—and possibly illegal—methods that just might succeed if they can stay ahead of the police.
From Audible: None
What I’m Watching:
I’m looking forward to a new series called Hazardous History, premiering on the History Channel on September 3. Hosted by Henry Winkler, the show explores the things many of us once considered childhood fun—hazardous toys, risky games, and even dangerous household items—that were perfectly normal back then but would be unthinkable today.

Jonetta | Blue Mood Café
I was my mother’s caregiver for almost a year so I know how rewarding and exhausting that can be. Rooting for you, Jodie💜
thathappyreader
Thanks Jonetta. It is rewarding work.
Deb Nance at Readerbuzz
I am sorry it is so stressful right now. Caregiving is very, very difficult. I admire you for your work.
How to Age Disgracefully and Hazardous History both sound like excellent diversions.
thathappyreader
Thank you Deb. I think they will be wonderful diversions too.
Harvee
My heart goes out to you and your parents. We are retired also, with several health issues we are managing so far. Hope things go smoothly for you in the next coming weeks.
thathappyreader
Thanks Harvee. I am retired too so luckily I have the freedom to help. I hope you continue to manage your health issues.
Joy's Book Blog
That’s a lot to deal with regarding your parents. I hope things get a little more settled for them and you soon.
What a fun concept for a history show — especially with Henry Winkler involved!

Thank you Joy.
Cindy's Book Corner
I am sorry it was such a rough week. Ours was as well, just for different reasons. I hope you are able to get some rest this weekend, before doing it all again this upcoming week.
thathappyreader
Thank you Cindy.
Vicki
I know how exhausting taking care of someone is. I took care of my husband who broke his neck and was a quadriplegic, his grandmother who had heart problems, was legally blind, and diabetic, and 3 childre age 8 and under. You do what you need to do when it’s a family member.

Oh my Vicki! You are an 😇
Becki
How to Age Disgracefully sounds hilarious! And Hazardous History sounds intriguing as well (and Henry Winkler is great!). Thanks for sharing, and take care of you too – you can’t take care of others if you don’t make sure your cup is reasonably full first {{hugs}}
thathappyreader
Thanks Becki! I’m doing my best to stay healthy.
sjhigbee
It sounds like you’re doing an amazing job. And when I was ill and having to wait for long periods for dr and hospital appointments, it would leave me utterly exhausted – something that doesn’t get taken into sufficient account, I feel. I hope you can find some additional help, as what your doing is draining physically, mentally and emotionally. Take care and I hope the coming week is a kinder one, Jodie.
thathappyreader
Thank you Sarah.
Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature)
I understand what you mean about helping parents out. I keep telling myself that one day my mom won’t be here and I’ll be sorry that I didn’t spend more time with her. But I’m missing my time at home to myself to read a lot these days. And it’s exhausting at times as well. So I’m sending you the vibes that I’m trying to keep myself going with as well. Here’s to hopefully a better week for us all!
thathappyreader
I feel the same way Lisa. I feel blessed to still have my parents and it is extremely rewarding to be able to spend time with them every day.
Yvonne @ It's All About Books
I hope you will enjoy How To Age Disgracefully! I loved that one.

Thanks Yvonne.
Anne - Books of My Heart
Your parents are lucky to have you. And it’s great you have the time with them. I have many appts for my daughter and she has one this week we waited for 18 months. I hate losing the daylight too, but the cooler weather helps. I hope your week goes smoothly and you have some time to care for yourself as well.
Anne – Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post

Thank you Anne. Good luck with the appointment.
Carla@CarlaLovesToRead
I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers, Jodie. I know we were my mom’s caregiver when she developed cancer, but I shared it with my 3 sisters. Doing it all, will definitely be exhausting as much as we love them and want to spend as much time as we can with them. Hugs. I enjoyed Killers of a Certain Age and hope you do as well. I am enjoying The Good Karma Hospital on Prime. I am into season 2. I hope you have a good week, although it looks like it will be very busy.
thathappyreader
Thank you Carla.
Marg @ The Intrepid Reader
That documentary series about hazardous toys would probably bring back lots of memories for me!
thathappyreader
I hope it will for me too Marg!

I’m sorry that it was such a stressful week, Jodie. I hope everything goes smoothly and that you find some extra time in between to take care of yourself too.
