My Week:
Happy Halloween to everyone celebrating this weekend!
We’ve had plenty of rain showers throughout the week, and the days are becoming noticeably shorter. This will be the first year that we remain on daylight saving time, so we’re certainly going to notice how late the sun rises over the next several months. As we approach the shortest days of the year, sunrise won’t be until 9:07 a.m. here. That’s late enough for me, although some of the more northern cities won’t see daylight until after 10:00 a.m.! On the bright side, it will be nice to have that extra hour of daylight at the end of the day.
It’s been a busy few weeks politically. We had our provincial election last weekend and now have a new premier-elect. The week before, we elected a new mayor and city council. One thing we can always count on is change, isn’t it?
We celebrated my hubby’s birthday this week and had a lovely time enjoying lunch together followed by a visit to the casino. It was a fun way to spend the day!
We’re still waiting for Mom’s MRI results. She had been experiencing some improvement in both her pain and mobility, but unfortunately, she now feels she’s taken a step backwards. It’s so difficult to watch her struggle, especially when we’d hoped things were moving in the right direction. Hopefully, the MRI results will shed some light on what’s going on and help determine a longer-term treatment plan.
I had planned to listen to If They Knew this week, but the book’s preface suggested visiting the author’s website for a list of content warnings. I’m certainly glad I took the time to check, as cannibalism and graphic violence are definite deal-breakers for me. Needless to say, I’ve decided to pass on this one!

From the Library:

This delightful collection of three feel-good Christmas novellas is filled with holiday cheer, romance, humour, and plenty of festive mishaps. In the first story, Anna’s disastrous Christmas dinner takes an unexpected turn when her high school ex arrives, forcing them into a fake-dating scheme to save face with their families. Next, Matty’s punishment for losing a bet has him spending the day dressed as a zombie Santa in a diner, but a cute and funny server may make the experience worthwhile. Finally, Lauren travels to the magical town of Little Christmas to stop her best friend from marrying someone after only three days, only to find herself falling for the best man. Along the way, readers can enjoy an unforgettable granny, accidentally matching Christmas sweaters, a Mission Impossible-style cat rescue involving a saxophone, mouthwatering recipes, and charming full-page illustrations.

Batter Gray is in his early twenties, living in New York City and searching for purpose in a world that expects him to pursue a respectable, secure career. Instead, he chooses poetry, believing it holds the power to preserve humanity, and begins working at Peck & Peck, a publishing company with thirty-nine editors. Named after his mother’s heroic dog and an identical twin whose brother died at birth, Batter is fascinated by life’s constant dualities—right and wrong, truth and lies, rejection and acceptance. But as he navigates his own uncertainties and the lingering presence of the brother he never knew, Batter begins to realize that perhaps every story has not two sides, but three.

Mia Hollister has built a successful writing career around a fictional ranching lifestyle, but when her popular column attracts a film crew eager to document her cowgirl world, she must confront the fact that she has never actually lived on a ranch. With her dream job on the line, Mia heads to her friend Arianna’s family ranch, where Arianna’s older brother, Dane, is tasked with teaching her the ropes. Although Dane initially finds Mia’s deception ridiculous, the two soon discover there is more to each other than meets the eye. But when the film crew arrives earlier than expected, Mia and Dane must scramble to keep her secret from being exposed, all while unexpected sparks begin to fly between them. I learned about this book on Edelweiss+. It is expected to publish on April 13.

Emily has always dreamed of attending the prestigious Briarly Academy, an elite English school that trains nannies to care for the world’s most powerful and wealthy families. After overcoming fierce competition, she graduates and lands what seems to be the perfect opportunity as a night nanny for a wealthy, secretive family in a Manhattan penthouse. However, when the young boy in her care begins experiencing terrifying night terrors, Emily senses that something is terribly wrong. As strange events unfold and the household staff and parents reveal troubling secrets, she begins to question why she was really hired and whether the child’s nightmares are warnings of something far more sinister. The deeper she investigates, the more dangerous the situation becomes, and escaping with both their lives may be impossible. I learned about this book on Edelweiss+. It is expected to publish August 10.

Peck and Peck sounds interesting. I wasn’t keen on Lessons in Chemistry but this one has piqued my interest. Visiting from the Sunday Salon.

I can’t imagine waiting until 9 or 10 am for the sun to rise! We changed our clocks back to standard time last night and sunsets before 5 pm are no fun either… sigh. Have a good week.
