Long before Jurassic Park was the embryo of an idea in Michael Crichton’s mind, there was ER. A medical student who dreamt of a career in Hollywood, Crichton did what any aspiring writer would: he created a script based on time working in a high-octane hospital emergency department. Of course, nobody wanted it. It wasn’t until Crichton turned his attention to dinosaurs and his 1990 novel Jurassic Park became a megahit – and a mega-movie franchise – that Steven Spielberg’s camp asked the former doctor what other ideas he was kicking around. Producers weren’t interested in Crichton’s dream to make a hospital film. But, they were looking for new television series programming and thought there might be something even bigger in the concept than a movie. And, thus, ER was born.
Why I Can’t Wait to Read ER:
I’ve always loved medical dramas, and ER has long been one of my favourite TV shows. When I discovered that Netflix was streaming all 15 seasons, I knew I had to dive back in and rewatch the series—while finally catching the episodes I’d missed the first time around. Having just finished the entire series, the timing for reading this book couldn’t have been more perfect.

I remember enjoying the episodes I watched, but I didn’t make it through all the seasons. Hope you enjoy the book! I didn’t realize it was built on Crichton’s work.

I recall watching all 15 seasons waaay back when ER was first screened. It was a must-watch for us. I should have guessed that the screenwriter was an ex-doctor – some of the storylines were too harrowing and hard edged. I think it changed the goalposts for TV dramas so this book about behind the scenes should be very interesting. Thank you for sharing, Lisa.
