My Week:
šØš¦ Happy Canada Day weekend to everyone celebrating! While much of the country has been sweltering through a heat wave, things have been much cooler here on the West Coast. Weāve had mostly overcast skies with the occasional shower, and the forecast is calling for warmābut thankfully not hotādays ahead in the next week. Honestly, who doesnāt love a perfect 25°C (77°F) day?
Iāve been enjoying some fantastic audiobooks lately. Many of my favourite authors release new titles in May and June, and Iām happily making my way through their latest summer reads. Iāve also noticed a growing number of Christmas-themed books popping up on NetGalley, which has me looking forward to cozy Fall reading days.
For the past few years, Iāve hosted a 20 Books of Christmas challenge, and Iād love to knowāwould you be interested in me bringing it back this year? Iām considering starting it a bit later, on October 1 instead of September 1, if thereās enough interest. Let me know what you think!
Books Iāve Added to My Shelves This Week:
From Publishers, Netgalley, & Libro.fm:
In The Locked Ward, adopted socialite Georgia Cartwright is accused of murdering the biological daughter of her powerful Southern family, landing her in a high-security psychiatric hospital while the media explodes with theoriesājealousy, rivalry, madness. When her estranged twin sister Amanda visits, Georgia pleads for help, insisting sheās innocent. Though Amanda doesnāt trust her, she canāt leave her in the eerie institution where reality feels warped and danger lurks behind every door. As Amanda digs deeper, she must unravel whether Georgia is a victim of a twisted family cover-upāor a manipulative killer leading her into darkness. Nothing is as it seems in this chilling psychological thriller about sisterhood pushed to its limits.
Lorna has spent her life burdened by guilt over her sister Kristenās lifelong addiction, which overshadowed her childhood and left her mistrustful and emotionally isolated. Now an adult, she lives a quiet, guarded life with only her dog for companyāuntil an unexpected friendship with Bean, a wise and winsome eight-year-old neighbor, begins to crack her tough exterior. When an opportunity arises to buy her beloved grandmotherās house, Lorna must confront the painful memories and betrayals of her past as part of a trust agreement. Guided by Beanās innocent insight, she begins to re-examine her past, discovering that not everything happened the way she remembered. In accepting that she couldnāt have saved Kristen, Lorna finds the strength to forgive herself and start rewriting her own futureāon her own terms.
From The Library:
Isadora Bentley is a rule-following, introverted university researcher whoās convinced happiness isnāt in the cards for her. She keeps to herself, avoids social interaction, and is determined to live a quiet, romance-free life. But on her thirtieth birthday, a spontaneous purchase of a magazine titled Thirty-One Ways to Be Happy sparks a secret research project: proving the article wrong. As she reluctantly tests each happiness ātipāāfrom smiling at strangers to indulging in chocolateāIsadora finds her well-ordered world slowly unraveling in the best possible way. Along the journey, she unexpectedly opens up to new friendships, surprising experiences, and maybe even love, realizing that happiness might not be so far-fetched after all.
From Audible:Ā None
What Iām Watching:
We stumbled upon the first episode of the sports comedy Stick on Amazon Prime, and right away, we knew it was a show weād enjoy. The series actually streams on Apple TV+, which we werenāt subscribed toāuntil we remembered that my husband bought a new phone this spring that came with three months of Apple TV+ for free. Perfect timing!
The show stars Owen Wilson as Pryce Cahill, a former professional golfer struggling to rebuild his life after a tragic loss and a divorce. His world begins to shift when he crosses paths with Santi, a 17-year-old golf prodigy who pulls him out of his deep funk.

Isadora Bentley sounds like fun – added to my TBR!

I hope that you enjoy it Trish!
Carla@CarlaLovesToRead
I’m glad you’ve been having nice weather, Jodie. It has been sweltering here. I definitely would participate in 20 Books of Christmas again. I had seen somewhere that the Julia London book is steamy, so I passed. I will watch and see what you find. I hope you have an amazing week.
thathappyreader
Oh I hope not Carla.
Roxanne
The premise of The Locked Ward reminds me of the movie Gothika! I look forward to reading your book review of it.

Thanks Roxanne.
Deb Nance at Readerbuzz
I’m wildly interested in happiness, so I felt compelled to see if I could find The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley. And, happily, I did. I’m looking forward to read that one!
thathappyreader
Thatās great Deb. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!
sjhigbee
I’m glad that you aren’t sweltering. We are uncomfortably hot at present – and far drier than we should be. I can’t quite believe that I’m hoping for a wet spell – but we could do with it. I hope the coming week is a good one.
thathappyreader
Thanks Sarah. I hope you have more tolerable weather soon.
Lisa Mandina (Lisa Loves Literature)
I have been noticing all the Christmas and holiday books too. They come out in October it seems, which is when I want to be reading fall or Halloween/scary books. I do a holiday book challenge for a week in November, so probably wouldn’t do much with another one. Hope you have a good week!

Netgalley is showing Christmas books publishing in August Lisa!
JoAnn @ Gulfside Musing
It’s been pretty hot and uncomfortable here, glad you’ve had more reasonable weather. Love the cover of Everything is Probably Fine – enjoy!

Val
Happy Canada Day…belated. Glad the weather up there has been perfect for reading! We had our heat early in Colorado and then moved on to rain. We are now back to seasonal. I suspect July will bring the close to 100 days – totally normal. I will either stay in the shade or stay inside.
I really love the cover and title of Everything Is Probably Fine. That’s how I feel a lot of the time. Hope it’s good.
thathappyreader
Not belated Val! Today (July 1) is Canada Day.
